Barbara Matthews Obituary

Barbara Ann Matthews

Greer

Barbara Ann Burriss Matthews, 88, of Greer, widow of William Parramore Matthews, Sr. passed away Saturday, June 24, 2017.

Born in Fayetteville, NC, on September 15, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Robert Greer Burriss, Sr. and Annie McArthur Burriss.

Active for four decades at Community Presbyterian Church in Hampton, VA, Mrs. Matthews served as an elder, president of Presbyterian Women, circle moderator, along with other roles. She received the Presbyterian Women's Honorary Life Membership Award. When she moved to Greenville, SC, she became active in the St. Giles Presbyterian Church family.

Barbara was a consummate homemaker and everyone enjoyed her cooking. She was a sewer of many fabrics, threads, yarn, and made curtains, upholstered chairs, and made her daughters' dresses that could not be compared to anything in a store.

She will be remembered by her three children, Susan Greer Carmines (Bill), Carol Ann Johnson (Bill), and W.P. "Matt" Matthews, Jr. (Rachel), with whom she made her home; eight grandchildren, Nathan Carmines, Emily Rich, Amy Johnson, Kim Brewington, Michael Johnson, Joseph Matthews, Benjamin Matthews, and John Mark Matthews; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her parents and husband of 53 years, Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Greer Burriss, Jr. and first-born grandson, Adam Greer Carmines.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 29, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Giles Presbyterian Church.

Memorials may be made to St. Giles Presbyterian Church, Arts and Music Department, 1021 Hudson Rd., Greenville, SC 29615.

It saddens me to hear of Barbara's passing, but I am sure there are lots of good memories that remain to think back on! So, dwell on those and remember all the good times!
She had a lot of years and I am sure many good times!
So, as much as she will be missed, you have those happy times to remember.
