Herbert VON GAL Obituary

DR. HERBERT VREELAND VON GAL, of Greenwich, died Tuesday, December 28, 2010, just shy of his 92nd birthday. He was born in Danbury, January 23, 1919 to George and Marjorie von Gal. Herb and his wife, Carrol, are survived by their nine children and their spouses, Ann von Gal and her husband, Louis Neiheisel; Mia Rossi and her husband, Paul; Bart von Gal; Peter von Gal and his wife, Shawn; Tim von Gal and his wife, Sharon; Diane Tobin and her husband, Rich; Tara Schwarz and her husband, Charlie; Martha Reed Donahue and her husband, Mike; Dirk von Gal and his wife, Carey; and 23 grandchildren. Being a well known member of the community, he had the opportunity to touch many lives. There was no such thing as running a quick errand, due to the amount of people who would stop and say hello. His presence in our lives is a gift, we shall always be thankful for. He had an amazing work ethic, flare for storytelling, love of life and family, and selfless nature, which is our legacy. His wife and children were always top priority. Every night he would leave Greenwich Hospital to have dinner with his family and to put the children to bed, only to turn around and go back to the hospital and finish his work. As well as, being a Senior Attending Radiologist at Greenwich Hospital, he was a founding partner of the Greenwich Radiological Group. He served in the Medical Corps of the United States Army. As Captain of General Surgery (3150), he was head of Eyes, Ears, Nose, Throat, while stationed in Japan during World War II. He graduated from Duke University in 1941 and received his M.D. from Long Island College of Medicine, in 1944. Funeral services will be held Friday December 31st at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, 469 North Street, Greenwich. Calling hours will be held Thursday December 30th from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch Street Greenwich. My condolences to the entire von Gal family. Herb was a valued mentor and friend to my late husband. He was a kind and caring physician during my daughter's illness so many years ago. His humor, compassion, and wonderful rambling letters bring a smile.

To the Von Gal family: I had the honor of working with Dr. Von Gal as a high school kid in the '60's processing X ray films at his practice in the "original" medical building. I will always remember his warmth, his compassion for his patients, and his patience with me while he gently and efficiently taught me how to do my job correctly. In many ways, I owe the remainder of my career to him, simply because I wanted to emulate him from that point forward.

He was a gift to us all, and God bless his wonderful soul.

Respectfully,

Nelson Schmitz (and Susan)

I had the honor of working with Dr. vonGal at Greenwich Hospital. There was not a more compassionate caring man than he was. Gathering to listen to one of his great stories and seeing the twinkle in his eye when he spoke of his family who were so dear to him was the best part of our day. And we loved when he'd drive the Winnebago to work. What a legacy he has left. I say goodbye with a smile on my faces and so many great memories in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Thank you for sharing your dad with all of us. Everyone is a better person for having known him.

Dearest Von Gal family,

I just learned this sad news. Your father was truly an angel that shared his time with us all on earth. Perhaps that is why he left so close to Christmas. He was always a great gentlemen right until the end; caring, charming, entertaining and handsome. Everyone always loved to see him and be around him. He brightened everyone's day. He also helped so many people, including members of my own family, for which I am truly thankful. I am very, very sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Sincerely,
Verena de Cholnoky and family.

To the Von Gal Family:

Some of my fondest memories involve bumping into Doc while going to sit with my dad (Dr. Joseph Murphy, one of Doc's partners) at the hospital. Doc always had a kind word, a warm smile, and, of course, a good story. Whether I was 8 or 28, I looked forward to chatting with Doc. I know my father cherished their friendship. Doc was truly a wonderful man.

I was 20 years old, and away from home for the first time when I started work at Greenwich Hospital. Four of us came from Vermont, and Dr and Mrs Von Gal would always ask us to come for dinner fro special holidays.. All the staff adored him, and would egg him on..didn't take much. To this day when I hear a loud sneeze,I think of Herb. I actually have several letters and cards he wrote me over the years..thinking of you all. Peg McKinnon Hansen, The Villages , Florida

What an incredibly caring clinician and gentleman. It was a joy to be in his company and consume his wisdom and joy. I used to service his view boxes and he would share his life stories. I will forever recall his ever present smile and warm greetings as he would traverse the hallways of Greenwich Hospital.

My mom, Margaret Bartoli, and I were very sorry to hear about the passing of your father. Dr. Von Gal was a great man and we were so fortunate to have known him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and we hope that all the happy memories will comfort you during this difficult time. Elisa (Bartoli) Foley
