John Cross Obituary

Cross, III, John W.
John W. Cross III, 82, of Greenwich, CT passed away on December 25, 2013. He was born on August 18, 1931 in New York City to the late Marion Moore Wood and John Walter Cross Jr. He graduated from Phillips Academy Andover and Yale University in 1953. He moved to Greenwich in 1958.He was predeceased by his first wife of twenty-three years, Gracia Hickey Cross. John served in the US Army as 2nd Lieutenant in the Military Police Branch.
John was a life member of the Round Hill Club, The New York Yale Club and was previously a member of Indian Harbor Yacht Club and The Links Club in New York.
John was the grandson of John W. Cross of Cross and Cross, an architectural firm in New York City who designs included the RCA Building- now the GE Building, Tiffany's, The Links Club, 20 Exchange Place, One Sutton Place and many others.
He was the president of The Edward S. Moore Foundation, his family's foundation for over forty years. When that split, he became president of Marion Moore Foundation so named after his mother. He had formerly been a manager of Clark Dodge in New York City until Kidder Peabody Company acquired it in 1974. He was manager at Kidder Peabody until retired in 1980.
John was a former Treasurer General of The General Society of Colonial Wars. He was also a Knight Commander in the order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, Royal House of Savoy. He was a member of the Nutmegger's and the Dinosaurs men's groups. He was an avid golfer and loved tennis and paddle. He had a love for the English language including reading, writing poetry and storytelling.
John is survived by three children: Cynthia Page Cross of New Canaan, CT, John Walter Cross IV, of Miami, FL, and Lois Cross Willis and his son in-law Gregory T. Willis, of Darien, CT. Five grandchildren also survive him -Taylor Willis, Malcolm Willis, Alicia Cross, Katie Cross, and Ross Laurence.
