Ingrid Bloomquist Pope died in her sleep Friday, February 28, 2014. She was 95. Born Ingrid Brostrom in Arvika, Varmland, Sweden on April 2, 1918, she came to the United States in 1928 at the age of 10, not knowing English, and was raised in North Minneapolis.
As a teen in Minneapolis she met Howard Bloomquist, who went on to a career as group vice president of General Foods and senior vice president and director of the Warner-Lambert Company. They later married in1941 and lived in Minneapolis, where they started their family, Mt. Prospect, IL Battle Creek, MI and Riverside, CT before settling on Round Hill Road in Greenwich, CT for 45 years.
As the wife of a marketing executive Pope was a world traveler, having visited Japan, China, France and many other countries.
Pope was an active member of the First Church of Round Hill, where for many years she sponsored the lighting of the giant fir tree during the holidays. She was active in many charities and organizations, including serving the boards of Nathaniel Witherell and Greenwich Academy and was a member of the Audubon Society. She was a member of the Stanwich Club, the Field Club and Indian Harbor Yacht Club.
After returning to school in the1970s, Pope earned her BA and Master's degree from Manhattanville College and went on to earn her Master's in divinity from Yale Divinity School in 1984. After Bloomquist's death in 1982, Pope met and married Marvin H. Pope, former Yale professor of near Eastern languages and civilizations and the leading authority on the ancient Syrian city of Ugarit. The two also traveled extensively together, living in Munster, Germany for two years on two Fulbright scholarships for Mr. Pope's research at Munster University.
Pope was an accomplished poet, painter and sculptor. She published three poetry books, Musings, Hosanna Help Please: On the Loss of a Loved One; and Blessings. Her sculpture of Jesus emerging from his tomb, The Resurrection, received particular notice for the natural discolorations in the marble around Jesus' hands and side.
In 2005, Pope moved to Lakeway, Texas outside of Austin, where she spent the remainder of her years and was an active member Lakeway Community Church. She often hosted tea parties for the church women in Lakeway.
She is survived by her son, Dennis Bloomquist of Great Falls, VA, a daughter, Laurel Bloomquist Shields of Lakeway, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Howard Bloomquist in 1982 and Marvin Pope in 1997, and a daughter, Diane Bloomquist Connelly in 2008.
A memorial service will be held at the First Church of Round Hill on Saturday, May 24 at 3 p.m., followed by a burial at Putnam Cemetery.
