E. Perle Obituary

Perle, E. Gabriel
E. Gabriel Perle, of Greenwich, Conn. and formerly of Palm Beach, Fla., one of the country's leading intellectual property authorities, died peacefully at home from complications from prostate cancer on August 8 at the age of 91. He was a son of the late Philip and Simmi Perle.
A native of New York City, Gabe, as he was known, was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Queens College in 1943 where he was president of the Student Council, editor of the school's newspaper, and the first recipient of the Student Council Award for Distinguished Service to Queens College. He served as a Lieutenant in the amphibious forces in the Navy during World War II and was in command of landing craft during the initial assault waves in the invasions of Guam, Leyte, Luzon and Okinawa.
After the war, Mr. Perle entered Yale Law School, where he was an editor of the Yale Law Journal and obtained his law degree in 1949. Mr. Perle began his legal career at the New York City firm of Cravath, Swain & Moore and spent many years as Corporate Vice President-Law at Time Inc. where he was responsible for the legal affairs of Time, Life, Fortune, Sports Illustrated, Money and People magazines as well as Time-Life Books, Home Box Office and Time Warner Cable.
During his years at Time Inc., Mr. Perle became one of the country's leading authorities in intellectual property, copyright, publishing, computer, entertainment and communications law. In 1975, President Gerald Ford appointed Mr. Perle as a founding Commissioner of the National Commission on New Technological Works ("CONTU"), which drafted legislation enacted by Congress for the protection of computer programming and software. His pioneering work helped lay the foundation for all future discussions of copyright law. At the time of his death, Mr. Perle was Senior Counsel at the intellectual property law firm Ohlandt Greeley Ruggiero & Perle, in Stamford, Conn. Mr. Perle was a past President and Honorary Trustee of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A. and a two-time Chairman of the American Bar Association's Copyright Division/IP Law Section in addition to having been a Vice President and Member of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Trademark Association. Mr. Perle co-authored, along with attorney John Williams, the seminal two-volume work, Perle & Williams on Publishing Law.
In addition, Mr. Perle was the Vice Chairman of the Big Apple Circus during its critical early phases. He was also a former director and secretary of the Baron de Hirsch Fund, of which he was an honorary Trustee. He was a member of the Century Association of New York City, and had been a member of Banyan Golf Club of Palm Beach, Sunningdale Country Club of Scarsdale and the Yale Club of New York City for many years.
Brilliant, witty, and dynamic, Mr. Perle thoroughly enjoyed life, golf and a good martini. But most of all, he loved - and was dearly loved - by his family: his wife, Patricia Sinnott Perle; his daughter Elizabeth Anne Perle, son-in-law Steven Pressman and grandson David Perle McKenna of San Francisco; and his stepchildren Jo-Anne Sinnott of Larchmont, N.Y., Diane Sinnott of Tiburon, Cal. and William Sinnott of Norwalk, Conn. Mr. Perle was predeceased by his first wife, Ellen Carlotta Kraus of Philadelphia, and his brother Richard of New York City.
At Mr. Perle's request, there will be no funeral service. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. The family wishes to thank Karen, Stacie and Claudette for their kindness, concern and care for Mr. Perle during his illness. Photo By Alfred Eisenstaedt.

I was a lucky guy to have Gabe as my publishing attorney, beginning in 1985 when he was at Proskauer. The first deal he negotiated for me at Random House was a big success and this pattern would follow in subsequent deals. He always negotiated with heads of houses (Bob Bernstein, Random House, for that 1985 deal) and approached everyone with grace, vigor, and a full understanding of the marketplace value of my projects. He handled each detail for me with patience and kindness, and I can say openly and to everyone who reads this, "I will always love E. Gabriel Perle, Esq. for the rest of my life."

I am saddened by our loss of Gabe, but somehow cannot keep something of a smile off my face and out of my heart when I think of him. It has been that way for a very long time. He was a good friend, real mentor, fun client, wonderful law partner, and a great joy in my and Jodi's lives, and a major force in my career. I thank and miss him, and send our deep condolences to Pat.

Friends for 75 Years.
Jim Doyle here. My wife Ethel Clancey Doyle and I go back a long way with Gabe -- to the happy days of 1939-43 when we were Queens College students. Gabe was President of the Student Council, I was Class President and Ethel Vice-President. It was there, working and laughing with Gabe, that we first came to esteem him as our dear friend. Along the way Ethel and I fell in love and were married in 1943, and Gabe and another dear friend, Harvey Dreyer, were ushers at our wedding. We three were all members of Alpha Lambda Kappa fraternity. Then came the War. Gabe became a Navy officer, while I was a Master Sergeant in Intelligence at MacArthur's Headquarters in Australia and later the Philippines. Gabe tried to connect with me several times as his ship moved around, with no luck until one night in 1946: The war was over and I was leading an Army unit on board the ship taking us home from Manila -- and there at the head of the gangplank was my buddy Gabe, Officer of the Deck that night! It was a grand trip home! Pursuing our careers in th years following we didn't see each other much but we kept in touch. Then a couple of years ago we drove from our home in Lake Mary, Florida, to their home in Palm Beach. We met the gracious Pat and reminisced and renewed our treaured friendhip with dear Gabe -- still the frank, friendly and funny guy we came to know and love so many years ago.

i was priveleged to meet Gabe through the CSUSA, editorial board and as a trustee. I see his smile as I write this note.

The first time I heard Gabe speak was at an annual meeting. He spoke so lucidly, clarifying technical intricacies of US copyright law in a manner which was fascinating to an early stage Canadian lawyer, just beginning her career in the field. He was inspiring, energizing, thoughtful and clearly a kind man, generous with his knowledge and enthusiastic to share and help others along a new path. Heartfelt condolences. Sincerely, Andrea Rush

Gabe's passing has really hit me hard. He made an indelible impression on my heart. He came to our wedding and my mother loved the conversation (thank you Pat). He always reched out to see how Bob, my husband and I were doing. He has a special place in my heart and always will.

An incredibly warm, friendly, bright, caring person, many years ago he welcomed me to the Copyright Society by saying, "Len, where have you been? We've been expecting you for quite a while." From that day forward, he always made me feel like a member of his family. I will miss him.
