ALEXANDER REED Obituary

ALEXANDER "SANDY" REED

Alexander "Sandy" Reed died recently at age 91 in Green Valley after a 20-year battle with prostate cancer. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA, attended schools there, then graduated from Amherst College and Harvard Law School. During World War II he served as an officer on several U.S. Navy minesweepers in the Pacific, ending his duties cleaning up the mines in the harbors of post-war Japan.

He practiced law for several years in Pennsylvania before embarking on an international banking career. This involved 40 years living and working in more than 30 countries (Europe, Asia, and mostly Latin America), representing several New York banks. On required retirement at 65, he worked for three more years for a New York consulting firm, making business investigations in several foreign countries. He finally returned permanently to the United States and has had a home in Green Valley ever since.

However, retirement was not in his nature, and he next authored five books. His first is a well-received textbook for financial specialists concerning the world's monetary infrastructure, published in Great Britain and the USA. This was followed by a self-published novel and several collections of short stories.

During his last five years Sandy had the great joy of sharing experiences and interests with Jeanne Slavin, who died recently but had a similar international life background.

He is survived by one sister in the United States, a wife living in Brazil, from whom he is divorced but still close, her stepson, two stepdaughters, and four step grandchildren, living in Brazil, the USA, and Italy.

At his request there will be no services.

Was very sorry to learn about Sandy's passing. He was a gentleman of the old school when a handshake was as good as a written contract. Remember how he was looking forward to heading Security Pacific's Sao Paulo office. My deepest condolences to Sandy's family.
