Robert KANE Obituary

News Death Notice

KANE, Robert Leo 75, of Oxford died January 2, 2014. Born on January 10, 1938 in New York City, Rob attended the College of the Holy Cross and earned a PhD from Princeton University before moving to Oxford to teach Classics at Miami University in 1962. He taught for 37 years before retiring in 2000. Beyond teaching, he published articles in academic journals and delivered papers at conferences, and this scholarship continued after his retirement. Rob was an enthusiastic traveler, a passionate reader, and a devoted lover of music, especially opera and piano music of the 1930s and 1940s. With an excellent ear and a profound interest in other cultures, Rob could make himself understood in more than five languages. He also enjoyed playing the piano for nearly all his life. His family and friends appreciated his wonderfully dry sense of humor. For the past 13 years, Rob volunteered at the Saint Francis Seraph Soup Kitchen in Cincinnati. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carol, and his two sons, John and Ned. Following his wishes, his family held a private mass and burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Rob's name to the Oxford Community Arts Center (www.oxarts.org). Condolences may be sent online to www.oglepaulyoungfuneralhome.com

When I first came to Oxford, Rob and Carol were by far the most welcoming and friendly faces I found. Rob and I shared a deep love of opera was well as of Sophocles, Homer, and all of Greek classical literature. As Chair I read the extraordinarily enthusiastic students evaluations of his teaching, described as both "passionate" and "witty." The loss of his friendship is irreparable.

Maureen and I offer our condolences to your family. It was a privilege to be Rob's colleague for many years.

The world's light has dimmed with Rob's passing. His brilliant mind, impish humor, and quiet generosity touched many people--likely without his having been aware of it or making much of it. Our family shall be forever grateful to him, and cherish him always. Much love to Carol, John and Ned.
