Alger Scott Obituary

Long time Hanford business owner, Alger (Scotty) Chamberlain Scott passed away Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the age of 94.

Scotty was born to Alger B. and Mildred C. Scott in San Luis Obispo, on December 7, 1915. Scotty's family moved to Hanford during his High School years, and as a young man, Scotty found himself working side-by-side with his father, at the Belridge Oil Company. Scotty also worked for Kaiser Permanente, Hitchcock Transportation and Don Keith Trucking, before joining his wife, Alice, in operating Star Stenographic Services, in 1958.

Those who knew Scotty, will remember a man with an incredible intellect. Well into his 90's, he could recollect the tiniest details of most events in his life. As Scotty got older, his speech was slower, but his stories held your attention. Scotty had a passion for understanding how things operated, and well into his retirement, enjoyed tinkering in his garage and on the equipment that he had operated for so many years.

Scotty was married to Alice Howard Scott. They met while working at Kaiser Permanente during WWII. After the war ended, they came to live near Scotty's family, in Hanford.

Scotty and Alice had no children. However, there were many friends, business associates and employees and the Scott's were well known in Hanford, as partner/owners of Star Stenographic Services. Clients knew Scotty paid tremendous attention to detail. He was very professional, and a true craftsman. Those who knew Scotty and Alice remember them as active community members. Their contributions to the community of Hanford were great.

Scotty was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, his parents, Alger & Mildred Scott, and his brother Royal Scott. He is survived by his sister Harriet Feaver of Fresno and numerous nephews and nieces.

It was always Scotty's wish to stay at home as long as possible, and many people assisted in his care over the past few years. But Rebecca Hubbard, who took him into her home and cared for him as part of her family, truly was his angel on earth. Because of her willingness to make this full time commitment, Scotty was able to live in a home environment as his health weakened.

Special Mention should also be made, to Adventist Health Home Care and Hospice for playing a tremendous role in Scotty's comfort and allowing Rebecca some respite care that she otherwise would not have received.

It was Scotty's wish that he be interred with his wife Alice, in Lodi, California. There will be a Memorial Service in Hanford, at People's Funeral Chapel, on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Adventist Home Health Care and Hospice, 460 Kings County Drive, Hanford.

Condolences may be offered at www.peoplesfuneralchapel.com.

Arrangements entrusted to People's Funeral Chapel, 501 N. Douty St., Hanford, CA 93230 (559) 584-5591.

Forgive my late condolences, I just learned of Scotty's death. Scotty, what a vast education and memory of details. Both Scotty and Alice were very much part of my family. My aunt (Mildred Scherf Bryan Fleming) worked for them when they were in the upstairs building on main street. I grew up visiting them often at the office and at their home. When I was able to get a work permit while in High School, I went to work for them proofing and doing bindery work. I continued to work for them for many years including while Alice was ill and subsequently passed away. I learned so much from Scotty through those years after Alice passed. He couldn't operate the computer but he could sure tell you what it would do and how you should be able to make it work. He always made you smile or laugh everyday. May you rest is peace dear Scotty with your very special Alice. May all of your family know how much you were loved. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.
Sincerely,
Carolyn (White)Gonzales Cook

Alice and Scotty were such a part of my life in the years I worked in downtown Hanford -- two of the most interesting, dedicated people I ever knew. Scotty joining Alice in Lodi reminds me of the story he told me about taking her ashes to Lodi and being stopped by a Highway Patrolman for speeding. Scottty said the patrolman got a little shook when Scotty explained the box of ashes on the front seat. Scotty was unflappable, and so was Alice. May they rest in peace -- together forever.

I had the great honor of working for Alice and Scotty in their print shop following my graduation from Hanford High. I learned so much from them. They were a special couple.

I had my first job with Alice and Scotty 35 years ago while I was in high school. They both had the strongest work ethics of anyone I have ever known and am so glad I got my first start with them. I would think of them often throughout the years. Scotty was the sweetest man and I am so very glad that we got to see each other again after so many years. He hadn't changed a bit. Such a gentle man.
