Lela Burris Obituary

Lela Mae Hall was born on July 18, nineteen hundred and thirty seven to proud parents, Bulah Mae Philips Hall and Herbert Hall in Hope, Arkansas. She was the oldest daughter of 11 children. She had five brothers, HV, Ulacee, James, Walter, and Luther. She also had five sisters, Bertha Mae, Clara Mae, Dorothy, Willie V. and Sheila.

Lela married Robert Lee Burris, the love of her life, in 1955 and had two daughters, Eva Mae and Lorraine. The couple moved to Los Angeles in 1959 where they added three more daughters to their union, Mary Louise, Barbara Jean and Denise Michelle. She was a loving and protective stay-at-home mother until her last child married n 1987, as well as a devoted wife for 33 years.

Lela accepted Christ at an early age and served in various churches as a Deaconess, Choir Member, Soloist, and as a member of the Mothers Board. Lela was loved by all who knew her and will forever be remembered for her love of God and her participation in the things of the Lord. She could often be seen at her local Wal-Mart, Burger King and riding the city bus with Bible in hand, dressed in her Sunday best, letting her light for Christ shine. She greeted everyone with a smile and one of her many terms of endearment, such as "honey" and "sweetheart." She also never left a scene without extending her loving salutation, "God bless you, honey." Though she never really held a position in formal employment, to her credit as a full-time mom, she raised five daughters, bringing them up in the Lord, having lost none to the trappings of the world as she firmly believed and held strong to the word of her God. Her legacy and testimony will forever be proof positive that when you "train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart form it." Proverbs 22:6.

Lela was a soldier in the army of the Lord and on September 15th two thousand and ten, she laid down her sword to study war no more and is now gone home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, leaving to cherish her memory, her five loving daughters and son-in-laws, Eva and Robert Sterling, Lorraine and Raymond Gulley, Mary and Said Aden, Barbara and Kenneth Samuels, and Denise and Donavan McKendell. She also leaves a legacy behind of fourteen grandchildren, Robert J. Sterling, LaTeaca Sterling, Rashaun Gully Pratt, Nicole Gulley, Tonica Callis, Kadir Aden, Kenneshia Samuels, LaTisha Jones, Jimmy Ray, III, Day'vione Ray, Jerrame Ray, Donavan McKendell, II., and Hunter McKendell; five brothers and sisters, Ulacee Hall, HV Hall, Luther Hall, Dorothy Phillips, and Willie V. Johnson and a host of nieces, nephews other family members and friends.

Lela is now reunited with her mother, Bulah; her father, Herbert; her brothers, James and Walter; her sisters, Bertha Mae and Clara Mae; and her former husband, Robert, who are now joining in rejoicing with the angels at her homecoming. All praises, glory and honor, be to our Lord.

Mom you are so dear in my heart, and I know you are looking down on your children and smilling, Mom I miss you so much, the pain is almost unbarible, but I know you are in a better place, God needed his singing angel. Now you can sing praises anytime you want. Mom you are my mentor, and I am so needing your strength and energy, and passion for God. But I will keep on fighting for Christ one day at a time. I will never give up on God, That was one of the things you taught us. Love you with all of my heart your daughter Mary

MOTHER BURRIS LOVED THE LORD WITH ALL HER HEART. SHE LOVED ATTENDING CHURCH AND SINGING PRAISES TO THE LORD. ONE SONG SHE SANGED THAT I REALLY, REALLY LOVED. I ALWAYS THINK ABOUT HER WHENEVER I HEAR THIS SONG OR WHENEVER THE SONG COMES INTO MY MIND.. THE SONG IS....." IN TIMES LIKE THESE, YOU NEED YOUR BIBLE, IN TIMES LIKE THESE, YOU GONNA NEED A FRIEND. BE VERY SURE, BE VERY SURE, YOUR ANCHOR HOLDS AND GRIPS THE SOLID ROCK. THAT ROCK IS JESUS AND HE IS THE ONE; THAT ROCK IS JESUS AND HE IS THE ONLY ONE. SO BE VERY SURE, BE VERY SURE, THAT YOUR ANCHOR HOLDS AND GRIPS THE SOLID ROCK". AMEN I MISS HER. I WILL SEE HER AGAIN WHEN THE LORD COMES FOR ME.

I know you will always miss your mom...but now she is at peace and in a better place. She loved all her beautiful daughters and cherished all the great times spent together.

Let the wonderful memories put a smile on your face in those dark moments when you are missing her and continue to stay in prayer.

On the floor of the hospital where mom passed away, was a maternity ward facing the ICU. There were lives coming into this world and lives leaving this world. I couldn't help but recognize the irony of it all. Seeing the contrast between well-wishers at birth and mourners at death inspired this poem:

There was no fanfare
when breath took no air
no horns blown
for this soul gone
where just down the hall
we saw tiny souls fall
into this world with celebration
into arms of jubulation
but a saint has gone home
a silent journey alone
no flowers sent
no balloons went
no cards, rhyming fables
set on beside tables
no well wishes
nor butterfly kisses
just the silent hum
of the machines still on
lines gone flat
indicating that
there should be
cheer and jubalee
for this soldier's end
of war and sin
overcoming of tribulation
reward of salvation

life enters in
and so death begins
when life exits out
is the time to shout
for us death's sting lost
for Jesus paid the cost
now soldiers have rest
our first birth being less
paler in comparison
to this soldier's inheritance;
Peace forevermore
on that distant shore

Love forever mom, Denise

The true test of a mother is the love of her children, and the very first quality I noticed in your family was love. You have my condolences for your loss. I promise that I am praying for your family. Your mother's tenacity in fighting of her illness was such an inspiration. Week after week she refused to give in, and now her Father has finally granted her rest. Remember Psalm 166:15 "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints." She has no more pain, she is in the wonderful arms of her Savior. May God grant you the peace which passes all understanding as we wait to be reunited with her in the air.
