Walter Howard Obituary

MARION – Walter "Walt' Raleigh Howard Jr, of Marion, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, April 29, 2011.

Walt was born on June 25, 1938, in Warren, the son of Walter R. Howard Sr. and Mary E. (Bradford) Howard.

He was a 1957 graduate of Marion High School and proudly served his country, as a United States Marine from 1957 to 1960. He completed biblical course studies at Marion College.

He married Patricia Louise Hollars on December 3, 1960.

He was a machine repairman at Bell Fibre in Marion and retired from there in 2001 after 40 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the First General Baptist Church in Marion, where he served as a Senior Deacon, Sunday School teacher and a trustee.

Walt enjoyed tending to his flower and tomato gardens every year, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

Walt is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Patricia Louise (Hollars) Howard of Marion; one son, Brian K. Howard (special friend: Lisa Carmichael) of Marion; two daughters, Tonya L. (husband: Dr. Todd J.) Fettig of Hartford City and Joni G. Elkins (fiance: Reggie Duren) of Hartford City; three sisters, Ruthie (husband: John) Chaplin of Marion, Opal Ashba of Woodburn and Alice (husband: Bobby) Johns of LaFontaine; eight grandchildren; two Great Grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Cecil Howard, Paul Howard and Phillip Howard, and three sisters, Mary June Woodruff, Juanita Shane and Helen Toy.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, in First General Baptist Church, 702 E. 30th St., Marion, with the Rev. Allan Reagan officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Huntington County.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 2, 2011, in Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave. Marion.

Memorials may be made to the First General Baptist Church, 702 E. 30th St. Marion, IN 46953.
