Alton Hastings Obituary

Alton S. Hastings 88, of Burlington CT passed away peacefully at home on December 25, 2013. Lovingly known as "Pops" Al was born in Bradenton, FL on July 23, 1925. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Betty, along with his parents and four siblings. He spent the majority of his years in Burlington and was proud of his land and home. Pops loved life, his horses, and his family. He was often found on a summer afternoon, sitting in his front porch rocking chair, sharing a cold beverage and good conversation with his favorite neighbors. He had a contagious smile and was always optimistic no matter what the situation. Al was a WWll veteran. He enlisted in the army at 17 and served in the D Day invasion of France. Wounded twice, he was awarded the Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster and a Silver Star for gallantry action. After the war he received his certification for a dental technician and was self-employed for over 40 years. He was an avid equestrian and loved trail riding in the state's forests. He and Betty shared many years as members of C.T.R.A., 4-H, and several other riding clubs. Al is survived by his only daughter, Kathy Carros, her husband Brian (who Pops always considered to be a son and his best friend), and their children, Samantha, and Mitchel who he thought the world of. The family would like to take this opportunity to express their gratitude to Vitas Hospice Care, especially Jen, Darcy, Dave, Kendra, BJ and Wayne. You are all truly amazing individuals. Memorial donations may be made to Vitas Hospice Care. Al will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery and a celebration of his life will be held at the family's convenience.
