POUCHER, Richard W. Richard Wayne Poucher died on Thursday (April 27, 2006) at his home in Winterville, NC after a courageous five-and-a-half year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 30, 2006 at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Greenville, NC. Rick's family will be receiving friends during a celebration of life, immediately following the service in the Parish Hall. Born on April 30, 1949, he passed away just a few days shy of his 57th birthday. Mr. Poucher was born in Hartford, and graduated from Manchester High School in 1967. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout. In 1970 he was married to Beckie Garlits and earned his degree in Social Sciences from Colorado State University, Fort Collins in 1971. Later that year he joined the Hartford Police Department, and during 24 years of service worked his way up from officer to lieutenant. Whether working as a beat patrolman, a homicide detective or undercover on the vice squad, he worked hard and earned the respect of his colleagues. He took great pride in his work and in his family. He and his wife of 36 years, Beckie, raised their family in Manchester and South Windsor. He was generous, thoughtful, creative, and loved a good argument, always wanting to have the last word. He was also as keen an observer of the natural world as he was of human nature. Whether kayaking, hiking or watching the birds from his kitchen window, a camera or pair of binoculars was often close at hand. He will be remembered most of all for his sarcasm and dry sense of humor that all who knew him grew to love. Surviving are his wife, Beckie; sons, Josh of Winterville, NC and Andrew of Orlando, FL; daughter, Julie Harbin, her husband, David, and their daughters, Michaela and Marisa, all of Oceanside, CA; parents, Wendell and Berenice Poucher of Manchester; sister, Kathy Klett, her companion, Bob Gerrity and her daughter, Kerry; sister-in-law, Jill Jenkins and her children, Jody and Jay. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: The ALS Association, Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter, 120-101 Penmarc Drive, Raleigh, NC 27603 (www.catfishchapter.org); or St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 107 Louis Street, Greenville, NC 27858. Arrangements by Wilkerson Funeral Home and Crematory, Greenville, NC.

15 years now since Rick has been gone. Seems like such a long time. I miss him still. He wanted us to grow old together. He missed what would have been our 50th wedding anniversary in 2020. I have so many good memories of our life together.❤ But life goes on as it must, and I have found a new life.

Dear Poucher Family,
It's hard to believe that so much time has passed since Rich passed away. I read the messages this morning and many of those that wrote tributes to Rich are also with him in heaven. I still think of him often with so many fond memories and experiences. Rich was all about family and I hope his wonderful wife and children are well. May God bless you and care for you as you remember this wonderful man.

It's been over nine years now since you left us Rick and more and more you are in my thoughts, particularly as our 50th HS reunion approaches. I will dearly miss the opportunity to trade barbs with you as we would most certainly have sought each other out to reminisce about times long past. No one misses you more than your family, but as HS progressed through our brief three years together I thought of you as more than a classmate. Another brother by a different mother as they like to say today. But you truly were another brother to me, especially during our senior year. Your memory lives on in the many other classmates who mourn your loss as well. You touched many lives in your all too short a time with us.

To the Poucher Family
I recently heard of your loss. I had the pleasure of working with Rich for many years. He was one of the greatest guys I have ever met. I know that you will miss him as will many who had the privilege of getting to know him. If I may I would like to direct your attention to something that Jesus promised. It is found in the Bible at John chapter 5 verses 28 and 29. There he spoke of a ressurection of those who have passed on. That promise assures us that one day all who are in God's memory will live again. This means that those whom we have lost in death we will have the opportunity to see them again. Please find comfort in that promise. It will take place because Jesus who is the exact representation of his father Jehovah, cannot lie.

Dear Beckie,
We are so fortunate to have moved to NC a few months after you and Ricky. This past decade holds many memories of our friendship. We know Ricky is with the Lord and nothing else can be better said. There will always be a void in our lives and Fran will especially miss the way she and Ricky would rib each other. We love you.

To Beckie and the Poucher Family:
Both Susan and I wish to extend our deepest condolences to all of you on Rick's passing. He fought the good fight as he truly was a warrior. Susan and I worked with him in the old HPD District Five and shared many an experience. Most were good but on that occasion where it was a tumultiuous situation it was very reassuring to know that Rick was there to back you up. After we both left "The Job" we kept in contact and he was a great comfort and inspiration to me as I dealt with serious illness. I only wish I could have been more of the same to him.

Dear Becky and family, in 1982 when I began police work I knew only one thing for sure. I had to find someone that I could learn from. While I had many mentors, Rick was on top. When I met him I not only learned about police work but a bit about life as well. Working with him over the years gave me a comfort level and confidence that cannot be surpassed. Words cannot express my sympathy for you all, and for a loss that affects us all. May God Bless. Goodbye old friend, you'll never be forgotten.

Beckie, Julie, Andrew & Josh - Although we lived so far apart and didn't see each other often, I will truly miss my brother, your husband and father. He was a wonderful brother who I admired and looked up to when we were growing up. Dear Beckie, Andy, Josh & Julie:
Through our mutual friends, the Griswolds, we learned of Rick's illness. After church this past Sunday, I opended the paper and saw that you had lost the love of your life and your devoted and proud father. Both Dave and I were so sad. We began to recall the memories from St. Peter's Church we shared through the years and how our oldest son, Aaron, choose Rick to be his sponser for Confirmation. Rick was an amazing person. He raised three great children and his love for you Beckie was always evident.
Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers during this time of grief.
Our Love,
Dave and Natalie Wing

To the Poucher family I wish you comfort in this sad time. I knew Rick when he came on and worked some of the same cases.
On one occasion, the description of a homicide suspect included a blue shirt with the number 9 on it. Rick and I spotted a similar built suspect with the number 6 on his shirt coming down a fire escape. We looked at each other and at the same time, smiled and said, " that's close enough for me".
It was the guy, Rick grabbed the suspect by the back of his pants and I grabbed the gun in his belt.We laughed about that every time we saw each other.
Rick was a great guy and he will be missed by everyone he knew. God Bless.

relieved that some of the intense struggle has ended. It

recollections to embrace and my prayers go out to you, the kids

wonderful person he was to help (a little) fill the void his
loss leaves. God Bless you and sustain you.

BECKI,
I AM SO HAPPY THAT JUST WEEKS BEFORE RICK'S PASSING I HAD A CHANCE TO TALK WITH HIM AND TO SEND HIM ONE OF THE MANY PRACTICAL JOKES HE PLAYED ON US ALL. IT WAS THE "MIRACLES NEVER CEASE" CARD HE MADE FROM A NEWSPAPER ARTICAL ABOUT STEVE PERSKY AND MYSELF MAKING AN ARREST. EVEN WHEN I TALKED WITH HIM RECENTLY HE STILL HAD HIS WIT IN SPITE OF ALL THE PAIN AND AGONY. WHAT A MAN! WHAT I WILL REMEMBER MOST ABOUT HIM THOUGH IS HIS KINDNESS AND COMPASSION FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE. HE NEVER LOOKED DOWN ON ANYONE AND ALWAYS TRIED TO BOOST YOUR SPIRIT. THE WORLD HAS LOST ONE OF IT'S FINEST.

I worked with Rick at the HPD for many years and he was a trusted friend as well as a gifted teacher.
Rick was the rare combination of the relentlessly tough law enforcement officer and the caring, consideratate gentleman who was able to differentiate between the two and apply them equitably.
His final struggle was fought far too early but, as always, he carried himself with honor, courage, and a deep caring for others.
Bless you Rick.

Dear Beckie and the entire Poucher family.
Rick was a very special fiend to me. We go back a long way, to when I first met him at the Police Academy. I admired Rick for many reasons, but what I admired most about Rick was his way of dealing with people when faced with making those on the spot decisions which we knew would have to stand the test of not only departmental policy, but the everlooming political atmosphere. He always treated people equally and fairly and would stand behind them as long they were doing thier job in a lawful manner. Rick was well deserving of the rank of Lieutenant, and should have gone even further. He was a good COP and a good Boss. I will also miss him as a great friend. Beckie, I wish we could have been there more to help out these last few years. Your strength, support and undyling love are to be admired by all who know you. We send you and your family our deepest and most heartfelt condolences.
And, Rick, I bid you my farewell salute. I will see you again soon.

Dear Beckie and Family,
I am deeply saddened with the passing of your wonderful husband. He was my boss and friend for many years. He treated all of us with dignity and respect. His courage, tenacity and integrity made him a natural leader.
I could never re-pay him for all the things he said and did for me. In the back of a moving van one day on Sigourney Street, I believe he saved me from death or serious injury as he stood his ground against four assailants.
Rick was a very special man who often shared his love of family and the outdoors. If every cop was like Rick Poucher, what a wonderful world this would be.
My heartfelt condolences to you and your family.
