George F. Ames

1925 - 2016

George F. Ames, of East Hartford, beloved husband of Dorothy (Hoppe) Ames, passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2016. Born in Springfield, MA on December 9th, 1925, he was the son of the late George H. Ames and Mildred (Hilner) Ames. He was formerly of Enfield, where he lived for 25 years. He leaves his wife, Dorothy of East Hartford, a son, Robert and his wife Verna of West Hartford, a son, John of East Hartford, and a daughter, Debra and her husband Richard Kimball of Nottingham, NH, and two beloved grandchildren, James and Kaycee Ames. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Celia Kimball, who passed away in June of 1999. George worked for Pratt & Whitney Small Tool in West Hartford before he became a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after 31 years. He also worked part-time for Mercer and Dunbar Armored car service. He was a veteran of WWII U.S. Navy European Theater and Asian Pacific Theater and a member of the East Hartford American Legion and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 15207. He was also a member of Branch 86 Postal Union, the AARP and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). He was a member of St. Mary's Church, East Hartford and he was a Polka Dancer for a good many years. He was an avid gardener and belonged to the Capitol City Rifle and Pistol Club. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 22, at 1pm at the Rose Hill Funeral Home, 580 Elm St., Rocky Hill. Burial with military honors will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 11am-1pm, just prior to the service.
