POOR, Janice "Jan"
Janice "Jan" Poor, 75, of East Granby, beloved wife of James "Jim" C. Poor, passed away Wednesday (February, 22, 2012) after a brief illness. Daughter of the late Dr. Luther Glynne Price and Isabelle (Pugg) Price, Jan was born on October 25, 1936 in Fresno, CA. She briefly attended college at Fresno State University before moving to New England during the mid 1950's. Originally settling in Wallingford, Jan and Jim moved to Hartford in 1967 and finally to East Granby, their home for the past 43 years. One of her greatest passions was car racing, and she was an active member of SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) and a Past President of the Bonnet and Boot Sports Car Club in Wallingford. Jan and Jim shared many adventures together and enjoyed socializing with their friends. In her leisure time, Jan enjoyed golfing at Copper Hill Golf Club in East Granby, league bowling in Simsbury, and watching sports - especially the New York Giants. She was a strong and independent woman who faced challenges with courage and optimism and never gave up. Her loving and determined spirit is carried on in her daughter, Rita Daves of Windsor and three sons, Rick Rome of Enfield, Roger Rome of East Granby, and Randy Rome and his wife Kelly of Granby. She also leaves nine adored grandchildren, Tim and Jenna Daves and Melissa, Laura, Danielle, Joshua, Leah, Tyler, and Bryan Rome; a great-granddaughter, Chevelle Rome; and her canine companion, Benji. Jan was predeceased by her son, Jeffrey Poor, a brother, Tom Price, and a sister, Dorothy Blank.

Jim & the rest of the Poor family:
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
We first met Jan at Lime Rock up on the hill in the old barn one night back in 1971. She was the source of many laughs and always had a calming effect on the hectic process of registration. she had a way of calming even the most angry drivers who had forgotten their paperwork at home.
She always had a kind word and a smile for all.
May the memories of all the good times remain with you forever.

I have known Mrs. Poor since 1968, when my family moved from Salt Lake City to East Granby. I grew up 3 houses from the Poor's, and Randy was and is one of my oldest and best friends, 44 years and counting (gulp).
As a boy, I was always fascinated that a woman could be so steeped in racing culture, as well as having been an accomplished amateur racer. I guess she and others showed Danica Patrick the way:-)
I have fond memories of Mrs. Poor - her raspy laugh, ready smile, and the fact that I don't ever recall her yelling at anybody -even though God knows we kids of Sage Lane and Nutmeg Hills all deserved it many times over.
The memory that will stay with me always was in the late 7Os when I was 13 or 14, and I took a pretty good fall from my bike in front of the Poor residence. I was bleeding and a bit dazed, and Mrs. Poor came rushing out, took me inside, and cleaned me up before calling my mother to give a heads-up. I was a bit embarrassed given my reputation as a tough guy (not) was shattered, but never forgot her kindness and compassion.
I am sorry I could not be there today in person to support Randy and his family, but I send my condolences from afar, and will say a prayer in church tomorrow for Mrs. Poor and those she hsa left behind.

Jan was always such a welcome presence - after a long night of driving to reach an event with tired bodies and frayed nerves, when one of us said "Hey, there's Jan!" everything felt better. Any problems with paperwork or registration were never a reason to feel frazzled - "Jan's here, she'll take care of it" She so clearly enjoyed herself it was infectious - and she cared about everyone there. My first time with the team at Watkins Glen I was watching practice on the bleacher seating on the front straight just before the wide right sweep and I was a little jumpy - Jan sat next to me, patted my leg and said "Don't worry honey, he knows what he's doing" - thank you for all you did Jan, for the racers, their families and much love to you and your family. One of a kind.
