Mary SLAUGHTER Obituary

SLAUGHTER, Mary Jean Mary Jean Slaughter, 75, of Bloomfield passed away on Friday, (January 7, 2011) at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Prattville, AL on July 19, 1935. Daughter of the late Georgia and Eugene Slayton, she grew up in Prattville, AL where she graduated with High Honors from Alabama State University (Member of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society) before marrying and moving to Connecticut. Prior to retiring from the Hartford Public Schools, she was an Educator and Librarian for 35 years at the former Brackett-Northeast School and Fred D. Wish Elementary School. Jean was an avid quilter who enjoyed hand piecing and hand quilting. She created beautiful quilts or wall hangings that had personal and historical significance. She won awards in the Senior Division of the CRT National Arts Program and The Connecticut Community Care, Inc. Art Show for her "out of the box" thinking. Jean attended Quilting Classes at the Bloomfield Senior Center and was a member of SAQA (Studio Arts and Quilting Association Inc.), The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art and the Windsor Art Center. Besides her beloved husband Andy, of 51 years, she is survived by her daughter, Denise A. Slaughter of Bloomfield, two aunts Archie M. Green (Chicago) and Edmonia Green (Washington D.C.) and five cousins Helen Herring (Prattville), Howard Green (Detroit), Paula and Monique Green (Washington D.C.), Patricia Hicks (Washington D.C.) and other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held Friday, January 14, 11 a.m., at Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor with the Rev. Dr. David L. Massey officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Bloomfield. Her family will receive friends Friday from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home. To leave online condolences, please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com.
