Paul Hughes Obituary

Paul M. Hughes, 72, of Bloomfield, husband for 50 years to Diana (Parks) Hughes, passed away Friday, July 18, 2014, as the result of an accident in Bloomfield. Born in Norwalk, son of the late Arthur Middleton Reeves Hughes and Sarah (Jay) Hughes, he was raised in Rochester, NY. His professional career was in commercial lending, first with the former First National City Bank and the New Britain Bank & Trust before joining the Connecticut Department of Ecomonic Development. As commercial lender for the Development Authority, he helped business to grow and expand in Connecticut. After retiring, Paul turned his focus and enthusiasm towards a variety of projects. He founded a non-profit that encouraged urban teens to consider entrepreneurship as a career goal. Recently, Paul worked for the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce where he passionately served as a Small Business Specialist, as an Administrator for the Middlesex County Revitalization Commission and, over the last 17 years, as a counseling resource and guest speaker for the Side Street to Main Street Minority Business Development and Leadership Program. Paul pursued his zeal for the outdoors with his maple syrup production business, Hughes Maple Syrup. He was an influential member of the Connecticut cycling community, organizing fund raising rides and area events. Besides his wife Diana, he leaves a son, Dudley J. Hughes and his wife Laura Burtness of Moss Beach, CA; a daughter, Laura Cattabriga and her husband Alberto of North Bay Village, FL; two grandchildren, Daniele and Alessandro Cattabriga; a brother, Arthur M. Hughes of Ft Lauderdale, FL; and two sisters, Sarah Carr of Madison and Emily Page of Arlington, MA. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 1, 2014 at 11 AM at Old Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church, 59 Tariffville Road, Bloomfield. Burial will be private in Old Saint Andrew's Cemetery. Contributions may be made in Paul's memory to the Wintonbury Land Trust or Old Saint Andrew's Church. The Carmon Windsor Funeral Home is caring for the arrangements. I go back with Paul a long time in Bike Racing and he was the greatest and most enthusiastic guys. I even used to stop by your house during my rides from Longmeadow. We sort-of lost contact when there were less long races for older riders, but I will never forget him! He was such a nice person. Please accept my humble condolences.

You know a man is great when you don't know him, yet you feel the gravity of his presence even in abscense. This news is the toughest news to swallow because it hits home. I never met Mr. Hughes but we shared the passion for people and entrepreneurship. So my heart is heavily saddened to know one of my very own is gone. Im filled with great remorse, not because of what a relationship we could of had, but because of the emptiness now felt in all the relationships Mr. Hugh achieved. My deepest condolences to his family first, colleagues, and friends as well. Rest in peace Mr. Hughes. Well done.

I have met Paul back in 2006 regarding establishing my own business. I still remember the conversations and the advise.
Paul would be proud to know that I made the step last Month.
Thank you and Rest In Peace!

It i¬s a great sadness to learn of Paul's passing. He was a very nice fellow, and a truly good person who brought out the best in those around him. When I first moved to Connecticut in 1985, I met Paul at the Tuesday night club races in Bloomfield. He was a towering figure among the other riders, and had to dig deep to make it up the hill each lap to not be too far behind by the top. One mile later he was back in the front few positions, ready to sprint for the finish, and he often won. I soon learned that if you out-sprinted Paul, you won the race, it was that simple. I beat him a few times, but only by giving it all I had. He was as good at getting the most out of the people around him off the bike as well. He talked me into volunteering to help set up the course for the state road race, and I continued to volunteer at rides and races after that. Paul taught me that if you have the chance to help out, you do. This is a lesson I have never forgotten.

I met Paul during his CSBDC years, one of the "miracles" he observed. He inspired many of us to succeed in our endeavors, connecting small businesses with each other whenever he could. Even when his position changed and I was no longer a client, he continued to be supportive and often had helpful advice when I saw him at chamber events. He was a rare individual, who will be sorely missed by many of us in the business community. My deepest sympathies to his family.

I met Paul through CSBDC, one of the "miracles" he observed. His enthusiasm for small businesses always inspired me to succeed,he was so proud of everyone he counseled. He continued to be supportive throughout the 10 years I knew him, even when I was no longer a client, when his position changed. We will all miss him. My deepest sympathy to his family.

We played and “jousted” together in our early years and I am so proud of the amazing husband, father, biker and contributing citizen he became. Now, we have lost him much too soon. There were many more giggles and stories yet to be swapped.

Paul was the guy who ran the old "Nutmeg" Bicycle club back when I first got into racing in the late 80's. He was a great mentor, and you could always count on good advice and a friendly word. We in the cycling community have lost a friend, and a member of our family.
I will always have great memories of Paul, and how I could never
quite manage to beat him in the sprint...
Rest in peace my friend.

Tom and I raced with Paul in the late 1970s early 1980s. He was a very special person with enormous enthusiasm and humor. He will be missed.

A genuine soul!!! Paul was a co-worker and truly was willing to help anyone that passed his way if he could. GODSPEED to the family! He can't be replaced and will be truly missed.

Paul shared his love of cycling and charities with so many friends and organizations. I recall meeting him many years ago when planning a fall bike tour for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. As we sat and talked over lunch, he imparted his expertise and ideas about bike tours he had organized and completed. He knew how to make a good ride a great one. What a super guy! He will truly be missed – especially by our non-profit and cycling communities.

With his office down the hall, Paul was our "neighbor" at the Chamber of Commerce. He was always looking forward to the next thing he could do for people who wanted to start their own businesses and improve their lives. (And what great maple syrup he made!) Paul will be missed!

I knew Paul primarily through bicycling. He was inspiration to us youngsters shown by his love of cycling. Primarily in the Nutmeg Wheelman/Eastbloc clubs he led a number of rides that left us in the dust. What a great man
