A West Hartford native, Sam was born on July 14, 1925 to Melvin and Fancheon Title. He graduated from the Loomis School in 1943 and from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1946. After graduation from West Point, Sam served in the occupation of Japan from 1946 to 1949 and then served in the Korean War. He served ten more years in the Army Reserves. He worked for the National Life of Vermont until his retirement in 1995. He served on the Board of Directors of Mechanics Savings Bank and the Hartford Tobacco Company for 20 years. Sam dedicated his life to public service. He served as Treasurer of the United Way of Greater Hartford for 25 years, receiving its Community Service Award, the United Way's highest volunteer award, in 1980. He served as an officer of Mount Sinai Hospital and on the Board of the Boys' Clubs of Hartford. He also served as treasurer of the Greater Hartford Jewish Federation. An avid golfer and life-long member of Tumble Brook Country Club, he served as its President from 1976 to 1978. David and family,
I was sorry to hear about your father. I remember him well - what a character! He was way ahead of his time, watching two games on TV at once (and listening to another). So he was a visionary as well as a nice man. My thoughts are with you.

Dr. Title and family, I was sorry to hear of your loss.

To the Title Family: Sam was my father's best friend growing up. He was an usher at my parents wedding. My father, Sam, David and I used to go duck pin bowling on Saturday mornings growing up. As youngsters attending our parents parties, Sam always took time to talk to us as a friend and father like figure. At TBCC he was an institution and one our favorite members to imitate with his signature cigar in mouth augmenting how he spoke with a lot of chewing, puffing and speaking continuously with a lot of golf talk. I've heard so many wonderful stories over the years from my father, grandmother and Elaine and Jerry that to know Sam was to love him. Elaine and my mother are very close "sister" like friends and have been for a very long time. The Judith,Jerome, Andrew and Peter Kohn family albeit shrinking still feels the pain and loss from Sam's leaving this earth but I'm sure he is already playing with Peter Savin, Dick Newfield, Arnie Cartin and man others up in the big TBCC in the sky.

Sally, Elaine and family,
You were my first friends in moving to Hartford almost 30 years ago. My favorite line of Sam's was " my favorite day to play golf was any day that ended in a Y.." Sam had a zest for life and a love of community, but most importantly family. May his memory be for a blessing.

I had the great privilege of knowing Sam through his work at United Way. In his role as treasurer for more than two decades, he worked hard to ensure that staff and volunteers kept a close watch on overhead expenses. Sam took his role as a steward of donors' dollars as a sacred trust. After leaving active board duty he continued to keep in touch with us at United Way -- his support always welcomed. He will be missed.
