Joyce Korten

1928 - 2017

Joyce "Jo" Korten, 89, of Cheshire, passed away Sunday, September 3, 2017 at her home. She was the wife of Robert Korten. Born July 28, 1928, in Manchester, NH, the daughter of the late Omer and Beatrice (Meader) Cargill. Jo earned a Bachelors degree from Bates College in 1949, and obtained her Masters from Central Connecticut State University. She was a longtime Cheshire resident where she was a teacher at Doolittle School. She loved teaching, especially promoting literacy in children; gardening, animals, traveling, and summers spent at her beloved Squam Lake in New Hampshire. Jo was active in the Cheshire community as a member of the Red Hatters and the Cheshire Garden Club; and, at Squam Lake, as a volunteer at the Squam Lake Nature Center. In addition to her husband of 66 years, Robert, Jo is survived by her daughter Suzanne Litwin and her husband, Craig, of Litchfield; her son Dr. Peter Korten and his wife, Gail, of West Simsbury; her grandsons, Jonathan and Ryan Litwin, Christopher, Matthew and Zachary Korten. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Friday, September 8, 2017, at 1pm at the First Congregational Church of Cheshire, 111 Church Drive. A private burial will be held prior to the service at Cheshire Hillside Cemetery. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire is assisting with arrangements.
