Augustine F. "Augie" Lepore, Jr., 88, of Bristol, died November 30, 2013. He leaves behind his beloved wife Helen (Roudie) of 64 years; his sons Michael Lepore of Arlington, WA, Mark Lepore of Belmont, MA, his daughter, Rosemary Lepore and her husband, Gregory Szyszkowski of Southington; his grandson, Nicholas Szyszkowski; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sons, Paul and David Lepore, his brother, John Lepore and his sister, Eleanor Carbone. He was born June 21, 1925 to Augustine and Rosina (Norbito) Lepore in Plainville. After graduating Plainville High in 1943, he enlisted into the US Marine Corps. As a first-class Private, he completed training and a surveying course at Camp LeJeune, NC, attaining the rank of Sergeant, an Engineer in charge of surveying parties at Camp LeJeune and in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Headquarters and Service Company 29th Regiment formed on Guadalcanal and Member of the Sixth Engineers Division, on Okinawa, Guam and Tsingtao, China. On June 21, 1945, Okinawa would be declared secure, Augie's 20th birthday. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After serving, he attended the University of Connecticut receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. He worked summers as a surveyor for the CT State Highway Department while attending college. Augie worked in the 1950's performing structural design work at American Bridge Division of United States Steel, New York and at Marchant and Minges, West Hartford; as a Professional Engineer for City Iron Works, Hartford and Enfield Road Construction Co, working on contracts for Hartford-Springfield Expressway and Bradley Field runway extensions; and, a Subcontract Engineer for the construction of Constitution Plaza for F.H. McGraw Company, in Hartford. In 1966, he entered into his private practice as a Registered Professional Engineer and Licensed Land Surveyor in Bristol, Connecticut until his retirement in 2007. Augie served as a President and Director of the Hartford Chapter of the Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers; Member of the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers, Consulting Engineers in Private Practice and the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping. He was one of the original Members of the Connecticut Association of Land Surveyors; he served as President of Surveyors Proprietor's Council, Northwest Connecticut. In addition, he served as a Commissioner and Secretary of the Public Works Board, Member of the Codes Review Committee, and the Housing Code Board of Appeals in Bristol. As an active member of Saint Gregory's Church in Bristol, he served as Trustee, Council Member, commentator and usher for 50 years receiving the Saint Joseph Medal of Appreciation from the Archdiocese in Hartford in 2005. He was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, a Member of the Bristol Lodge of Elks 1010, and a Member and past President of Unico. He was an avid golfer and bowler and, up until his illness, was in annual attendance of every Sixth Marine Division Reunion, taking him to various destinations in the country, twice revisiting Okinawa as well as TsingTao, China. For most, Augie will be remembered for greeting you with a smile and a joke and sharing one of his many Marine experiences. He relished times spent with his family especially during the holidays and loved being in the company of friends. Our special thanks to Charlie Weldon, a faithful friend and classmate. Dear Helen, Michael, Mark and Rosemary, This guestbook doesn't have the space for me to even begin to do justice to a memorial to your husband/father. I have and hold the greatest affection for him. In 1977 he truly rescued me from a horrific summer job at a large, local car dealership. To his credit, I had applied for work in the Spring 1977 and he called me in for an interview and told me that he could not hire me, having promised someone else a summer position, but that he would call if something developed. He later called and I began work in late June 1977, for the Lepore and Caggiano incarnation of the business. He then paid me, a part-time summer worker, for Independence and Labor Days! Working there, with Helen as secretary, and even Helen's dad doing jobs around the office, and with other great people like Joe Caggiano, Dave Perry, Steve Smith, Pete Forrest was the best summer job I could have imagined, perhaps the best job, outright. I worked on and off for the next four years. He always treated me perfectly. I later came to learn that Augie's childhood home was adjacent to my father's childhood home on Hough Street, and that Augie knew my father and his family. The picture in the obituary is exactly the way I remember him. He seems to have lived as full a life as anyone I know including, most unfortunately, the loss of children. He was a great man. Please accept my most sincere condolences during this difficult time. God bless Augie and God bless your family.

I grew up with Augie Lepore as my neighbor, and throughout my life I always called him Mr. Lepore. Finally, when I got to be about 50, he told me one day that I could just call him "Augie" instead of "Mr. Lepore". However, I never could stop calling him Mr. Lepore. The one thing I knew about him is that he loved to work in his yard. After reading about his life, I don't know where he found the time to even do that. But he did love to work out in his yard, it seemed to me that doing that was perhaps a kind of a therapy for him; he just seemed to be very much at peace when he was doing that work. As I grew older, working on my parent's house got to be a kind of a therapy for me as well. I would see him when we were both outside working, and he was always so interesting and also fun to talk to. And as can be seen, he lived the fullest life anyone could hope to live. And I will also say this; after reading his obiturary, I am glad now that I never stopped calling him "Mr. Lepore" because he deserved all the respect that I could give him.

Augie was one of the kindest members that I met when I first began working for the Connecticut Association of Land Surveyors. He always had a smile and was more than willing to be helpful in any way.
My sincerest condolences go out to his entire family.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Kurland
