GERAGHTY, Harry
Harry Michael Geraghty, 78, of Ellington, beloved husband of the late Gail (Waxenberg) Geraghty, died Saturday (November 19, 2011) after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born in St. Albans, NY, son of the late Martin F. and Margaret (Moore) Geraghty, on January 16, 1933. Harry graduated from LaSalle Academy in NY and received his undergraduate degree from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY. He continued his education with graduate work at Southern Connecticut State College and Trinity College. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He started his teaching career as a history teacher and assistant basketball coach at Lyman Hall High School in Wallingford. After the Class of 1966 dedicated their yearbook to him, Harry transitioned his teaching and coaching career to Canton High School where he met his late wife, Gail. Harry made a final move in his career to Rockville High School in Vernon. While teaching at Rockville High School, he continued to coach basketball until 1980. He then transitioned his coaching and mentoring skills to track & field and cross-country. Harry was a respected and valued teacher and coach by his students and peers. Teaching and coaching was the essence of Harry's soul. He dedicated his career to 'his' kids. Although he retired from teaching in the early 90's, he continued coaching at Rockville High School until 1997 when he then took his coaching skills to South Windsor High School and concluded his coaching career at Wethersfield High School. Harry received many accolades for his coaching skills. He took pleasure in traveling with his wife Gail, and their lifetime friends, Bobby and Donna Martin. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed many "Final Fours" with his all time favorite girls UCONN Huskies team. He was also an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and Red Sox! Harry was a parishioner of Saint Bernard Church in Rockville. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Deanna Geraghty-Meehan, and her husband, Christopher, and his beloved granddaughter, Vivian Meehan. He also leaves his brother-in-law, Mark Waxenberg and his wife, Mary, and nephew, Christopher Waxenberg. His family extended to his friends that taught and coached with him as well as his kids and friends at Casey's in Ellington. He will be greatly missed and will remain in all of our hearts forever.
His family will receive friends for calling hours on Friday, November 25, 2011 from 4-7 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon. Tina and I were telling some friend about Harry just the other day. I think we're talking about high school sports, which is a big part of Wyoming culture. We wentvon to say how Harry was in the who's who hall of fame for his coaching of track and field with high school girls. And of course we had a laugh about the napkin episode. We will always remember Harry and Gail they were the best!

I had the pleasure of coaching at South Windsor High School while Harry was coaching track. While we were colleagues, he was very much a mentor to me at the start of my coaching career. He had a great way of delivering a message of wisdom, without making you feel like he was lecturing, and was always a source of calmness when difficult situations arose. I remember how much he loved the Chicago Bears, and how much he loved helping young people to be the best they could be. After being a coach for 29 years, I can say that Harry was a positive influence, and will always be remembered fondly. My condolences to his family and the many athletes and coaches who were lucky enough to have been positively influenced by Coach Geraghty like I was.

We were having diner the other night and the cloth napkins brought a smile to us. When Harry was at the home in Southbury, he would sneak a napkin or two and hid them in his room. On one of our visits he produced three napkins in his pockets. We all had a good laugh over that including Harry.

Oh the memories of US history - don't know where it came from but he would call me 'Spotted Fawn' when I wore my hair in braids. Always was smiling making jokes!! THE most favorite teacher that I ever had. And he never changed 'his' look...loved that crew cut!! I will always remember him as such a nice person....RIP....

Harry Geraghty coached track at South Windsor High School while I was there coaching lacrosse. He was always quick with a joke, and was a calming influence who had a way of putting things into proper perspective. I admired and looked up to him, and I am proud to have called him a mentor, a colleague, and a friend. He is one of the great coaches, and human beings, that I have ever known. RIP Harry I will forever toast to you during Bears games.

I had the pleasure of coaching athletes from another school sytem, and every meet with Harry was a great event to which to look forward. He was a wonderful person, great coach, always brought out the best in his athletes, had a terrific sense of humor, and I will continue to treasure him in my memory as I am sure so many others will, too. My condolences to all who had the privilege of knowing and loving Harry.
