Honore Owen Obituary

Honore Martyn Owen, Jr., 85, of Brunswick Maine passed away March 23, 2015 in Bath Maine. He was born in Decatur Illinois, October 23, 1929, the son of H. Martyn Owen Sr. and Virginia Hunt Owen. Marty attended the Phillips Exeter Academy (1947), Princeton University (A.B. 1951) and Harvard Law School (LL.B. 1954). At Princeton, Marty played goalie for the Tiger's lacrosse team which won the national championship in 1951. He married the love of his life, Candace Catlin Benjamin in 1952. After finishing law school, Marty enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a contracting officer in the Supply Corps in Yokosuka, Japan from 1955-1958. Following his service, Marty joined the law firm of Shipman and Goodwin in Hartford Connecticut. Marty became a partner in 1961 and served as the firm's senior partner in the area of municipal governance as the city attorney for the town of Simsbury. He later became an accomplished antitrust lawyer representing dairy cooperatives in the Northeast states. Marty and his wife Candie moved to Simsbury Connecticut, where they raised their three children. Marty involved himself in numerous community organizations and boards including the Symphony Society of Greater Hartford, Simsbury Free Library, St Alban's Church, and the Hartford Hospital Institute of Living. His love and dedication to the education of his children was demonstrated by his involvement as a board member of Renbrook School where he was honored with the distinction of being made a lifetime trustee. Marty loved his family with his heart and soul. His musical talent and piano skills were a joy to all. He serenaded everyone with show tunes and the music of George Gershwin and Cole Porter. In 1954, Marty and Candie built a summer home in Small Point, Maine. It became the summer meeting place for the entire extended family. After 38 years Marty retired from Shipman and Goodwin. Marty and Candie moved to Brunswick Maine in 1996 to be closer to the Mid Coast area they loved and to be near family. Marty served as a member of the vestry of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and employee recognition committees at the retirement home. Marty and Candie also loved to travel and spent many wonderful times together wining and dining their way across France, Spain, Scandinavia, and the West Coast of USA. Marty is predeceased by his wife Candie. He is survived by his sister, Virginia Owen Schoder of Evanston, IL; three children, Leslie of Olympia, WA, Peter and his wife Sherry of Brunswick, ME, and Douglas of Morris Plains NJ; as well as four nieces, three nephews, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers donations in Marty's memory may be sent to: Renbrook School, 2865 Albany Ave, West Hartford, CT 06117. A memorial service will take place in Brunswick in early August.

Doug and Marty's Family:
My deepest sympathy in Marty's passing. I worked for Marty as his secretary for three years before his retirement from Shipman & Goodwin LLP. His work as a Trustee of the Hartford Grammar School Scholarship Fund was very dedicated and productive, providing scholarships to students who met the qualifications, said fund, which transitioned in 1998 to the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving (HFPG). Marty also communicated with me every year after his retirement to enter his March Madness selections into the S&G Pool. Marty was a great person to work with.
May fond memories of happy times sustain you during this sorrowful time.

Marty was a giant for Exeter- a class president- , a giant for Princeton, and a "first citizen", for so many municipal, County, and Fellowship organizations.
With sadness for loss, we rather Celebrate his life and his splendid influences.
