GOLDBERG, Dr. Richard N.
Dr. Richard N. Goldberg of Kensington, passed away after a long fought illness on August 4 in N. Naples, FL. Dr. Goldberg or "Richie" as he was lovingly referred to by his family and friends was born in Norwich, CT on April 5, 1947. He grew up there and graduated from Norwich Free Academy high school in 1965 and went on to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill where he studied pre-med. Always wanting to be a doctor, Richie attended the University of Bologna Medical School in Italy where he earned his degree. Upon graduation he returned to Connecticut and completed his residency at New Britain General Hospital and quickly became engrossed in the community as a MD in Internal Medicine in 1982. He opened his private practice in Kensington and treated patients for nearly 30 years in the area. Some of his career highlights included; the MD for the Kensington and Berlin Police and Fire Departments, the New Britain Police and Fire Departments and the Medical Director at Rushford in Middletown for several years. He also sat on the Board for the Berlin VNA, and was an Assistant Medical Examiner for the State of Connecticut. But perhaps one of his fondest achievements came in 1985 when Dr. Goldberg was chosen as the team physician for the then New Britain Red Sox and held that important role within the Rock Cats organization until becoming very ill in 2010. He stayed on as team physician emeritus until his death. "Doc" loved the Rock Cats and being a part of the team and the feeling was mutual. He was predeceased by his father, Joshua, mother, Charlotte, brother, Stuart and sister, Cynthia. Richie is survived by his nephew, Marc Goldberg, his wife, Christine and their three children, Alex, Matthew and Ava of Phoenix, AZ whom he loved like his own grandchildren and affectionately referred to himself as "Gruncle Richie." Dr. Goldberg is also survived by his sister-in-law, Hilda Goldberg Ibana and her children Karen Miscavage, Kim Lavelle and Kenneth Jones as well as their children and grandchildren. His extended family includes his uncles, Louis Goldberg, Joseph Goldberg and Abraham Goldberg as well as his cousin Gail Sauter to name a few.
There will be a Memorial and Reception for Dr. Goldberg at one of his favorite places to be in town, New Britain Stadium on Friday, September 6 from 5-8 p.m. behind home plate. In lieu of flowers the family asks to make donations to the Hospital for Special Care, 2150 Corbin Ave New Britain, CT 06053, which was responsible for helping Richie prolong his life and live the past 3 1/2 years and share it with his friends and family.

A great friend and supportive and kind colleague during my years as director of Berlin VNA. Rich was medical director and confidant to us all. . It was a pleasure to enjoy some fun times together in south west florida where we had both retired. His infectious humor was with him always.

Doc became the "family physician" of Jenny and I in 1984 just as I was beginning my 15 year term as Executive VP and General Manager of the New Britain Red Sox/Rock Cats. The Boston Red Sox were looking for a local MD to take care of their players/coaches and it was a "no brainer" to bring Richie on board. He became a great medical resource to the team and would take a call at any hour of the day to help out the players. He became the physician to our boys, Joe and Jordan, in their young adult years and was an absolutely wonderful human being. Rest in peace, Doc. Condolences to the family.

In my younger days as a Emergency Room Unit Secretary; I had the pleasure of working with DR. Goldberg when he was a resident. He was always a delight!!! My family has used him as their primary care provider as well through the most recent times - and he will be surely missed. You could not meet a more compassionate man who loved his profession and patients. It was with deep sadness that I read he had passed on and he sure did give 'the good fight'. Our family is so saddened at this loss.

I knew Dr. Goldberg through the Rock Cats so his legacy in my mind is the wonderful work and caring support he lent professional baseball in New Britain. Doc, you hit a home run that I'll never forget.

I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Goldberg took such good care of my dad, William Bloethe, for years. The last couple years my dad visited Dr. Goldberg in the hospital a couple times. He told me after his visits "doctors shouldn't get sick! They've been helping people all their lives! It's just not right.". I know my dad missed him . I get some comfort thinking maybe my dad was there to welcome his Dr. & friend home. Peace, Chaleen Bloethe Abely
