Thomas Smith Obituary

Thomas N. Smith passed away on November 21, 2013. Tom was born in Hartford in 1937. He was the son of the late Alton Norris and Harriett (Coburn) Smith. He was proudly raised in Manchester. He was an active and popular fellow all through his school years. Though he was an only child, he had many first cousins. Tom was a top student. In high school, Class of 1955, at Manchester High School, he played baseball, football, and track and was a member of a state ranked swim team. He went to UCONN for four years on scholarship and swam for UCONN in his freshman year. He was a member of Theta Xi fraternity and was nominated to "Who's Who Among American Universities and Colleges." Also, at UCONN, he was a member of the Student Senate, The Student University Relations Committee and the Goodwill Committee. During his senior year, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated in 1959, with a major in English with honors. Tom went on to the Univ. of Illinois. He was a graduate student there and earned a M.A. in English in 1961. When he found out there was a newly created PhD program in English at UCONN, he returned to his CT roots. When he came back to UCONN, he reconnected with his future wife and the love of his life, Sheila (Shelly) McClench Smith. She was employed by the U.S. Air Force in Wiesbaden, Germany as a Kindergarten Teacher. Tom joined her in 1962 and they were married in Basel, Switzerland. They returned to CT, where Tom continued his studies. He received his PhD in 1966. Tom and Shelly taught in Fairbanks, Alaska for several years, and then returned to CT to teach for the remainder of his career. He taught at UCONN, U of Alaska and the longest at U of Hartford, from where he retired in 2009. He specialized in Medieval and Renaissance Literature. He created a Humanities course for U of Hartford's engineering students; it later became an all university curriculum course. One of Tom's proudest moments was his participation in the 1963 march on Washington. Tom enjoyed traveling and music more than anything in his life. His love of music he shared with his wife, his children and grandson, Max. In his early twenties, Tom met with some of the world's greatest jazz musicians in Newport and was asked to "sit-in" with them, though a hand injury forced him to refuse. His storytelling, laughter and passion will be forever missed by all who knew him. He loved his students, his family and his friends dearly. Tom is survived by his wife, Sheila (Shelly) McClench Smith of New Hartford; his son, Ian Spenser Smith of Simsbury; his daughter, Jessica Erin Smith of New Hartford who will miss her favorite dance partner and his grandson, Max, also of New Hartford. Friends may call on Friday, November 29, 2013 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 5 Steele Rd. New Hartford from 3 - 5 PM. The family requests that friends bring stories and cherished memories of Tom to share at 5 PM. Visit an online guestbook at Montano-shea.com.

I will always treasure Tom and Shelley and their children, Ian and Jessica. I had the great honor to be their babysitter when I attended high school in Winsted, CT. Tom and Shelley were so important to me as a teen. Their children, Ian and Jessica were so smart and fun. They were like family to me. I learned so much taking care of them and will always treasure the memories. I hope to connect with them soon!

Rarely a day does by that I don't think of Tom, an extraordinary mentor, an engaging conversationalist, and the best professor I ever had. Plus a loving husband to Shelly and father to his. kids.

No one ignited my passion for literature more than Tom. In the classroom, he was simply electric. I am so glad I got to see him and his beloved Shelly a few years ago (I am a '71 graduate). I will never forget this total "original' and his laughing eyes.

I am so sorry to have just learned about the loss of Tom. He was absolutely the best teacher I ever had at University of Hartford. Always passionate, kind and thoughtful. And such an infectious smile. I remember his dedication to swimming at the outdoor pool at the University. And how much he loved and appreciated music, the arts...and especially his family.

When I was a new student to MHS in my junior year, Tom was one of the first classmates to reach out and befriend me. I have been forever grateful for that kindness. In later years, whenever we met, he was always his steady, kind, and GOOD self. He had the gift of friendship.

My condolences to the entire family of Tom Smith..
My memories of Tom Smith go back to the 4th grade at Robertson school.
Being the new kid in our class I was bullied on the first day . Tom came to my aid . he has been my hero ever since.
Always an excellent student and excellent athlete.. I will never forget Tom receiving the Thom McAn
trophy for being the most outstanding football player class of 55. Both of us being from the North end this made me very proud..
If their was any man who could achieve what ever goal no matter how high that man would be our own Tom Smith class of 55.
classmate and friend , Mike Escavich.

What a great friend in High School. Thanks for the wonderful time at Tom Flaherty's home in September 2005 @ our 50th Class Reunion MHS. My wife, Linda, said you are one wonderful human being. I also agree.

I attended UofH from 68-72 as an English major. I have forgotton alot about those days, But I have never forgotton Tom. What a great and genuine teacher he was. I took every class he taught. He was animated, engaging, funny, casual, insightful and he always really knew what he was talking about. He lit up the classroom. Everyone wanted to get into his classes, he was that guy.

On a personal level, he was always sincerely interested in what I, and all his students, had to say. He was kind and a good listener. A good story teller too. And he was a lot of fun to be around. In balance, he took the serious times in which we lived seriously. A great laugh,a great smile and a twinkle in his eye. And most of all, love in his heart.

My best memory, a story I still tell: Each May first he would read aloud to the class and anyone who dropped by, with drama and sadness and hope and love, James Dickey's long epic poem "May Day." It was mesmerizing, powerful and poinant. It was a standing room only event.

My sincere condolences to Tom's family.

I did not know Tom well, but I was always fond of his wit and humor. When our paths crossed, it was most likely at one of Ian's October parties near the refreshments. Ever the raconteur he was always a delight. My sympathies and kind thoughts are with you. Sla'inte.

With deep sorrow I learned of Tom's passing. Our friendship began as classmates in Hollister school and continued through our years at Manchester High School where we were team mates on the MHS swimming team. Time passes and we lose contact with our school friendships as we go our separate ways in life but there are folks we never forget, Tom was one of them. I will always remember Tom's smile and good humor. God Bless you Tom and may your spirit be with our Lord.

Dear Shelly and family,
Although it was many years ago, I remember Tom as a good, kind and intelligent man. You and he deserved a much gentler ending to such a well lived life.
May his memory forever be a blessing.

Dear Shelly and family,
There's a special place in our hearts for classmates, kids we grew up with, socialized with, competed with as fellow team members. The words that typically come to mind when we think of these kids are, popular, well-liked, friendly and more, but in Tom's case we would all agree he was LOVED. He was one in a million and he will be sorely missed. My deepest sympathy is extended to you, Shelly, and to all of your family.
Sincerely,
Dick Jenkins
