Jay HOWROYD Obituary

HOWROYD, Jay Tucker Jay Tucker Howroyd, 60, of Manchester, beloved husband of Lauren Canning Howroyd and devoted father of Sarah, Jesse and Amy, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, (April 1, 2010). Born in Hartford on May 18, 1949 to Harry and Elizabeth (Reinholdz) Howroyd, Jay grew up in the Green Manor neighborhood of Manchester and attended Manchester public schools and earned both B.A. and M.Ed. degrees from the University of Connecticut. Jay had a strong background in special education and shared his talent with students at Mansfield Training School, Windham Technical School and Sweeney School. For the past 28 years, he was employed by the Travelers Insurance Company as a Technical Director of Operations. A zealous fan of the New York Yankees, Jay celebrated the 16 world championships that the Yankees earned during his lifetime. Jay was an athlete, an avid UConn basketball fan and enjoyed playing basketball, softball and golf. He served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Men's Club at Tallwood Country Club. Jay was an active member of the Town of Manchester Parks and Recreation Commission for many years, a member of the Board of Directors for the Mayor's Program for Manchester's Children and recently had been working to promote the expansion of the Mary Cheney Library. He inherited from his parents a strong commitment to community service. A lifelong supporter of the Democratic Party, Jay was also a former member of the Manchester Democratic Town Committee. He leaves behind his loving wife of 29 years, Lauren Canning Howroyd, and three children: Sarah Howroyd of Manchester, Jesse Howroyd and his fiancée Jennifer Bailey of Newtown, MA, and Amy Howroyd of Manchester. A sister Jill Lawler and her husband Jerry of Dublin, NH, and a brother Josh Howroyd and his wife Anne of Manchester also survive him. He leaves his mother-in-law, Claire Canning of Portsmouth, RI, as well as several loving nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, and many devoted friends. His parents and his brother Steven Howroyd predeceased him. Jay was blessed with a natural wit and a contagious enthusiasm for life. He found his soul mate in his wife Lauren and passed on his love for life, music and Bob Dylan to his children. Everyone who was fortunate to know Jay came to appreciate his analytical abilities and his firm belief that life was meant to be celebrated. Jay selflessly dedicated his life to his family, Lauren, Sarah, Jesse and Amy. Relatives and friends are invited for calling hours on Monday, April 5, 2010 at John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center St. Manchester, CT from 5 – 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. James Church 896 Main St. Manchester on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 11 a.m. followed by burial in East Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to The Hole In The Wall Gang Camp, 265 Church Street, New Haven, CT 06510, or to the Mayor's Program for Manchester's Children, P.O. Box 1373, Manchester, CT 06045. For online condolences and information please visit www.tierneyfuneralhome.com.

To Jay's Family
I only knew Jay through online Bob Dylan internet websites, but he was a pleasure to "talk" to, and very generous with his copies of rare Bob Dylan material. My heart goes out to al of you. If he was this kind and thoughtful to "strangers" online, he must have been a wonderful person to have as a family member.

To Jay’s family
We never met Jay personally, he was a member of our virtual internet community dedicated to the music of Bob Dylan.
That was where I “met” Jay almost 10 years ago and we never lost contacts.
He was greatly appreciated for his contributions to our group. Whenever one of his mails arrived, you could be sure to read some warm, friendly and often humorous words.
We will try our best to keep our group running in Jay’s spirit.

Hi Lauren & kids,
We are holding you all close in our hearts always even though we have not been together for a while. Know that we have been keeping tabs on you all through camp angels. Love to all and know that your dad is joking around with Erin floatin' on those rainbows and making sure that we are all being watched over very lovingly.

Gone too soon. He always said Hello in the mornings. He was always willing to help or just chat for a minute. I didn't get a chance to know him too well but I can honestly say that our office will not be the same without him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

To Jesse and the Howroyd Family,
We are so very sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Jay. While we did not have the pleasure of knowing Jay personally, we are inspired by the lovely written tribute and have been fortunate to know his son Jesse, a wonderful teacher at the Soule Early Childhood Center in Brookline, MA. Jay's dedication to his family is evident in Jesse, always patient, loving and kind. We send our heartfelt condolences to Lauren, Jesse, Sarah, Amy and the extended Howroyd family. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I was so very sorry to hear of Jay's sudden passing. I knew Jay through the Manchester Soccer Club and it was always a pleasure to work with him. We had a chance to talk at length years ago during tournament weekend at the High School and I remember thinking how lucky we were to have him as part of our soccer family. My condolences to you all.

To the extended Howroyd family,
Deepest sympathy to all on the loss of Jay. What a great guys and family man! I hope in time you can cherish his life and memory. From the time I first met him and Josh and all the Howroyd's, he immediately felt like family. It was worth trucking down from Boston to Manchester to play for Cummings Insurance softball team in the late 80's and 90's. Especially when we had perennial shortstop (and vacumn) Jay Howroyd mannin' the middle. Rest in peace.

Lori and Family,
I was very sad to hear of the loss of your beloved, Jay. The unexpectedness of it all makes it harder to bear and I feel so much for you! I want you to know I am thinking of you and praying that you endure these days ahead with brave hearts. Please keep your faith and family with you as they help make you stronger as time goes on. I remember so clearly when my dad passed, Auntie Claire saying to me "Time will help heal ..." and it does, slowly but surely.
To everyone in the family, I am thinking of you...
My Deepest Sympathy,
Cousin Michelle

Words cannot express the sadness I have been feeling since hearing of Jay's passing. I've had the privelege of knowing Jay for the last 20 years and I have been recollecting the numerous converstions we had (usually in the parking lot after one of our softball games) about our shared interests in the Yankees, golf, music, Manchester, politics, and sports. He had a passion for these interests, and of life in general, that was infectious and then, of course, he would break down the meaning of it all as only Jay could. I'm honored to have been able to call him my friend. Our hearts go out to Lauren, Sarah, Jesse, Amy, Josh, Anne, Jill and all of Jay's family. Jay will be deeply missed.
