Thomas Kehle Obituary



Dr. Thomas John Kehle, 74, of Willington, died on Wednesday, February 7th, 2018, at Manchester Memorial Hospital. He leaves behind his wife of 56-years, Gretchen Kehle; grandchildren, Megan and Matthew Dwyer; brothers, Gregory Kehle and Anthony Kehle; and sister Pamela Kehle Schwantes; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Deborah G. Kehle; mother, Genevieve; father, Anthony; and brother James. Professor and Director of the School Psychology Program at The University of Connecticut since 1987, he previously worked as a Professor at Kent State University and The University of Utah. Dr. Kehle graduated from Pompano Beach High School and subsequently joined the United States Army. He earned his Bachelor's degree from the Florida Atlantic University and his Master's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Kentucky. A noted and prolific scholar, Dr. Kehle was devoted in his service to the professions of psychology and education. His protégés were a source of incredible pride and satisfaction to him, and to whom he selflessly passed on his commitment to school psychology. Dr. Kehle was a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA); the Association for Psychological Science (APS); and the American Association of Applied and Preventative Psychology. He was the recipient of numerous prestigious national awards, and was especially proud of The Legends in School Psychology Award and the Outstanding Contribution to Training Award, both bestowed upon him by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). Dr. Kehle's professional work is in wide use in school psychology programs and schools throughout the country. Details regarding a memorial service will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Muscular Dystrophy Association (www.mda.org/make-a-donation) and/or a scholarship in Tom's name for School Psychology graduate students at the University of Connecticut.
