Robert E. Green

1924 - 2014

Robert E. Green, 90, of Old Saybrook passed away September 6th after a brief illness. He was born June 17th 1924 in New York City to the late L. Lawrence and Hortense Bimberg Green. He grew up in Mt. Vernon and New Rochelle, New York and graduated from New Rochelle High School and the University Of Pennsylvania Wharton School Of Business. His college education was interrupted by World War II, as he served two- years in the United States Army as a staff sergeant in the 3rd battalion of the 393rd infantry, during which he received a combat infantry badge and two purple hearts. Bob worked for Standard Oil of New Jersey after his college graduation, followed by a move to Hartford in 1947 to join his family's jewelry business, Lux Bond & Green. He was named president in 1973 and chairman in 1992, during which time he helped expand from two to seven locations. He was known as a respected leader and gentleman, and always treated his staff with the utmost respect. Bob served in leadership capacities with several civic organizations, including the Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce, the steering committee for the construction of the Hartford Civic Center, the head of building and grounds for the Institute for Living, the Charter Oak Camera Club and the Dauntless Club. He was well known and respected within the jewelry industry serving on the boards of the American Gem Society, the Jewelry Industry Council, the Boston Jewelers Club, and as President of the Jewelers Vigilance Committee as well as the Jewelers of America. He received numerous awards in the industry, including the Triple Zero award from the American Gem Society and, the Gemological Institute of America League of Honor Award. Bob was also inducted into the Retailer Hall of Fame from National Jeweler, and the Hall of Fame for Junior Achievement of Southwest New England. He was an avid gardener, boater and bird watcher. He leaves his wife of 34 years Nancy G. Green. He also is survived by his children, Marc and Sheryl Green, Candace and Jim Krause of Dallas, Texas and John and Norma Green. He leaves nine grandchildren and their spouses Dr's.'s Ashley Green Dorin and her husband Ryan, Matthew and Evelyn Green, Zachary Green, Samuel Krause, Dashiell Krause, Daniel and Jenna Green, Deborah Green, Alexandra Green, Charles Green and three great grand children. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Green and his wife Bobbie, nephew Andrew Green and niece Madeline Smith and their families. In addition, he is survived by his three step- children and their spouses, Liz Sommers, Mark and Cindy Konney and Greg Konney and their children. The family would like to send their appreciation to the caring staff at Middlesex Hospital. Funeral arrangements are private.
