Samuel Freed Obituary

The Honorable Judge Samuel Freed, son of the late Morris and Rose (Levin) Freed, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on May 17, shortly after his 88th birthday. Sam was a loving and devoted husband to his wife Joyce, father to Karen Ledesma, Kenneth Freed and his wife Victoria, beloved grandfather to Marissa and Ali Freed, Jett and Brooke Ledesma. Each of whom held a very special place in his heart. Sam is also survived by his sister Pearl Sims of Naples, FL. A Hartford native, Sam graduated from Weaver High School (1944) and entered Norwich University (1948), in Northfield, VT. His studies were interrupted by service in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After completing his service with the U.S. Navy he returned to Norwich University where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1948. Sam continued his education at Harvard Law School where he received his L.L.B. degree in 1951. After graduation Sam served as Assistant Corporation Counsel for the Town of West Hartford and went into practice with Attorney's Arthur Feinstein and Milton Krevolin. In 1986 Sam had the honor of being appointed a Superior Court Judge by Gov. William A. O'Neill. After working in many facets of the Superior Court, Sam was appointed Chief Administrative Judge of the State of Connecticut's Civil Division and then continued his service to the State as a Judge Trial Referee. As a past President of the former Cliffside Country Club, Sam spent his leisure time playing tennis, trying to master his golf game, and following the N.Y. Giants. The family wishes to thank the wonderful nurses at Hartford Hospital's Infusion Center and CB3. As well as the Home Care Division of McLean's in particular Lisa Pequita, R.N. and home health care provider Susan Hartwich. A private funeral service for the family will be held on Tuesday May 19th. Shiva will be observed at the family home on Tuesday from 5-9pm and on Wednesday from 4-9 pm Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford, CT. Dear Freed Family
I knew Sam well from the time he joined my Dad's practice until I left for medical school. He was a brilliant attorney, a kind man and fun to work with. I am sorry for your loss. The law firm of Krevolin, Feinstein and Freed is now gone. They were all wonderful men and attorneys and they will be missed.

Kenny, I am sorry to read of your Dad's passing, one of the most level headed, even handed men to ever serve on the bench. I'm sure Larry Bodian would express his condolences if he were aware of your Dad's death. Tom Grodecki

Please accept my deepest sympathies on the passing of Judge Freed. He was a Harvard Law School classmate of my father Paul, part of the generation of great lawyers and judges that inspired my own entry into the law.
