John Cavo Obituary

John William Cavo, Jr., M.D., 74, beloved husband of Lynn Cavo for 50 years, passed away in his home surrounded by family on Wednesday, June 3, 2015. Jack grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York, the son of the late John and Lois Cavo. He attended Arlington High School, then went on to Yale University (1962) and the University of Virginia Medical School (1966). Jack completed his internship and first year of general surgery in Rochester, NY, served as Captain in the U.S. Air Force in Cheyenne, Wyoming, completed his residency in head and neck surgery in St. Louis, Missouri, then went on to medical academics and private practice in central Connecticut. A highly esteemed otolaryngologist, Jack served on many boards including the American Board of Otolaryngology, the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Surgery, and the Centurion Club of Deafness Research Foundation. Additionally, Jack was a member of The Triological Society and an Assistant Clinical Professor at the UCONN School of Medicine. However, his greatest pride centered on the care he gave to his patients, providing them with a great wealth of knowledge and skill, as well as respect and empathy. Many will remember Jack's humor and stories, his academic commitment and brilliant mind, and his generous spirit. In addition to his wife, Jack leaves his children Melanie (Garth), John (Cynthia), and Charles (Michelle), as well as his cherished grandchildren: Larkin, Julia, Clare, Cecily, George, Will, James, Jack, Nathaniel, and Tyler. We cherish the memories of his love for spending time with all of them--fishing, building sand castles, playing tennis, skiing, gaming, swimming, and cheering for them on fields and stages. He was predeceased by his brother, Edward Cavo. A celebration of Jack's life will be held Friday, June 12th at 10 a.m. at First Church Congregational Church, 75 Main Street, Farmington, CT. Calling hours will be held Thursday, June 11th from 5-8 p.m. at Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main Street, Unionville, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospital for Special Care. Jack's family would like to express deep gratitude to Dr. Jeff Baker and the staff at the Harry Gray Cancer Center, as well as the staff of Day-Break, McLean Hospice, and Amy's Angels for helping to provide dignified end-of-life care and support. In honor of Jack, please stop and celebrate a moment today.

To the family of Dr. Cavo my sincerest condolences on the passing of Dr. Cavo who was my doctor for my thyroid cancer surgery back in 1977. A wonderful doctor.

I was a classmate of John Cavo, at Arlington High School, in Poughkeepsie NY, and remembered him as an excellent student and a rather reserved, yet responsible person.

I was saddened to hear of his passing, and convey my condolences to his family.

Lynn, just found out about Jack's death. Nell and I met you on the High School reunion cruise on the Hudson River. My first (and only) experience water skiing was at Jack's father's place on Candlewood Lake. We just had our 50th anniversary on June 5th. Jack was a good friend. [email protected]

Dear Lynn. It was my privilege to recently join Jack and his friends at the weekly Thursday luncheon. I was immediately impressed by his warmth. As I learned more about him I realized that I was in the company of a great man who did many wonderful things for those who he served with distinction. Lynn my prayers are with you and your family at this time- I know that all of you shared his journey in life with great love. Bruce Wilson

I had the privilege of working with and for Jack Cavo for many years. He was the epitome of what a Dr should be. He went above and beyond what many Drs would do for their patients. He had a great sense of humor and loved telling a joke. Loved his Juicy Fruits and would even share. Above all else he loved to teach and share his knowledge with the medical students and of course the ENT residents. The world has lost one of the good guys and I am happy that I was fortunate enough to have known him. My deepest sympathy Lynn and to the rest of the family Rest in peace Jack Cavo.

Unfortunately we never had the opportunity to know Jack personally. However, we know that he raised an amazing son in John. Obviously Jack was as accomplished a father as he was a physician. Our prayers go out to all of the Cavo family during this difficult time.

We knew Jack only 13 years, as the happy and joyful father/grandfather to our good neighbors, John & Cynthia Cavo. Jack was a beautiful spirit, so kind and loving to the three boys and everyone he met. At this sad time we also feel for Lynn, as we witnessed her unending commitment to Jack and his comfort and care. We will think of you all dearly next Friday as you celebrate this great man's life.

Aimee and I are very saddened to learn of the passing of Jack. While we have been away from the area for years, we only have fond memories of this fine gentleman and doctor who was a friend for all the time we lived in CT. Our condolences to his wonderful wife Lynn and all his children and grandchildren.
Jack will be missed by all who knew him as a friend, physician, or colleague.

Jack practiced medicine for all the right reasons. He was truly a prince of a guy, and I shall remember him always as a special friend. May joyful memories and love sustain his family now as they experience the loss of a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

I worked closely with Jack Cavo in his medical office for ten years. He was an outstanding physician and an even better human being. I never met a more caring person. He felt so deeply about everything and it was evident in the way he cared for his patients. He was an outstanding head and neck cancer surgeon. Not only was he a fine physician but a loving human being. I remember a tense morning in the office after he returned from surgery when all of a sudden he looked at me and pointed his finger to come into his office. I immediately got a pen and pencil and went right into his office. He closed the door and told me a hilarious joke and we both cracked up laughing. He loved a good joke and had a great sense of humor. When I think of Jack Cavo a smile always comes on my face. Rest in Peace, Jack. You were an amazing human being. To Lynn and his family, Please accept my deepest sympathy. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Sending lots of love,

I left New Britain 12 years ago, but will always remember Jack as an excellent doctor and a kind and decent man. He was very helpful to me personally when I first came to town and started my practice. It was an honor for me to have been a colleague of his. My thoughts are with the family--may you take some comfort in knowing how many lives were touched by Jack.
