Joan Eagan Obituary

Blessed are they who hear God's word and live it all of their days. Joan Mullaney Eagan's greatest legacy will always be her love and devotion to God and her family. She was called home by the Lord October 9, 2015 surrounded by her family. Joan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, mother-in-law, sister-in-law and friend. Joan was born August 16, 1931 in Pittsfield, MA to Thomas and Josephine Mullaney. She was raised in Lenox, MA and worked as a secretary for General Electric. On December 13, 1952 she married F. Owen Eagan, the love of her life. Joan leaves her children Mary Ann Eagan, Michael and Geralyn Eagan, Owen and Judy Eagan and Margie and Richard Waal. She was a devoted grandmother to Mike and Elizabeth, Kerry, Kevin, Caley, Maura, Owen, Aidan and Saige and great grandmother to Tyler. Joan leaves her brother-in-law, Sam Johnson, sisters-in-law, Margie Tracey and Mary Eagan and numerous nieces and nephews. "Granny", as she was known to her grandchildren, attended all events from dance recitals to football games. She was an avid runner even before there were runners. She enjoyed tap dancing with "The Sophisticated Ladies." Joan was known for her style, elegance and class. Friends will always remember her handwritten notes, personalized gifts and warm smile that lit up the room. In honor of Joan's enthusiasm for life and her great sense of humor, make someone smile today! Joan enjoyed summers at Old Lyme Shores with her family, running Canterbury Estate Sales with her sister in law, Margie Tracey, and volunteering at numerous organizations. She and Owen were one of the founding couples of St. Timothy's Parish. Joan was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth Mullaney Johnson, her brother-in-law, Jack Tracey, and her nephew, Russ Jacobson. Joan's family would like to thank Dr. Becherl and the Caleb Hitchcock Staff, Brightstar Staff, Seniors Helping Seniors and Hospice for their loving care and compassion. There will be a Mass of Christian burial celebrating her life at 10:00am at the Church of St. Timothy, 1116 North Main Street, West Hartford, CT 06117 on Tuesday, October 13, 2015. Burial will follow in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, please give a donation to St. Timothy's School. My condolences to the Eagan family on Joan's death. I retained the dynamic duo of Joan and Margie and Canterbury Estate Sales to manage many sales for estates I have administered. They always were a pleasure. I am sorry for your loss.

Dear Family of Joan, Honestly I can not remember how we met, but how lucky I was that we did. She was the loveliest of "girls" that I knew. Always with a sweet smile; and so friendly. She was everyone's friend.

Living across the street from Mike and his family for 30 years, we have shared so many family milestones--from field trips to school plays to high school sports. We were fortunate to also enjoy the enthusiastic, loyal and ever present cheering section led by Joan at school and community events involving Eagans and their classmates. As a (new) grandmother, I marvel at Joan's determined good humor and energy, and wonder if I will be able to replicate it. I will certainly try.

Mrs. Eagan was a wonderful woman with a natural grace, an easy smile and charm, and an unmistakable genuine spirit that came through the first time you met her and stayed with you from that point forward. Naturally I was also pleased and impressed that she got my jokes which is always a good thing, as that is not always the case. From what I know she lived a tremendous life which she dedicated to her husband Owen, Sr. and children and grandchildren. What more admirable endeavor is there? The character which she bestowed upon all of her great and accomplished children and grandchildren is the testament to the wonderful life she lived, the wonderful person she was; and simply the greatest tribute that anyone could give her. It is a crowning achievement indeed. Her spirit and legacy will live on for posterity as it most certainly should. God Bless Joan and the entire Eagan family. My deepest condolences to everyone. Her vibrant spirit will remain with us all.
