Thomas Deneen Obituary

Thomas J. Deneen died unexpectedly on November 1, 2016 in Melbourne, Florida. He was born on March 26, 1930 in Jamaica, Queens, New York, to Thomas J. and Claire (Flynn) Deneen. Tom graduated from Jamaica High School where he excelled in baseball and basketball and was named to the All-Queens, New York City, basketball team. He continued his athletic and academic accomplishments at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT where he was co-captain of the baseball, basketball and track teams and was awarded 10 athletic letters during his college career. In 1953, Tom was the Connecticut Collegiate batting leader with a .371 batting average. Upon graduation in 1953 he was the co-recipient of the Gladstone Award which honored the most outstanding student-athlete in the graduating class. Tom played in the Hartford Twilight Baseball League and led the league with the highest batting average in 1954. Tom was elected to CCSU's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986. Tom earned a Master's Degree from Columbia University and commenced a long teaching and coaching career initially in East Hartford, Ct., and over 30 years at Central Junior High School in Greenwich, CT. Tom served as the Greenwich High School varsity baseball coach for 20 years. In 1988 he was named the CIAC Connecticut Baseball Coach of the Year. Tom's teams won over 300 games and won five Fairfield County (FCIAC) Championships. One of Tom's former player's was Steve Young who was a pitcher on his varsity team. Steve was so touched by Coach Deneen that he invited Tom and his wife Nancy to Steve's NFL Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Canton, Ohio. Tom also coached Greenwich Central Junior High School girls basketball for 15 years and was town champion for 12 years with six undefeated seasons. Tom and his wife Nancy retired to Melbourne in 1994. Two weeks before Tom's passing, he was inducted into the Greenwich High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy (Borden) and he leaves two sons, Thomas of Melbourne, and David of Greenwich, CT., as well as two granddaughters, Morgan and Shelby, whom he adored, and two brothers, Donald of Sarasota, FL and Richard of Vernon, Connecticut. Tom was a tough and intense competitor on the baseball field and on the basketball court but he was a kind, loving and gentle man away from sports competition. Tom was deeply loved and admired by his family, friends, students and former players and will forever be in our hearts. Tom lived a productive and great life and he is now reunited with the love of his life, Nancy. A celebration of Tom's life will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 11:00am at Hope Episcopal Church, 190 Interlachen Road, Melbourne, FL. There will be a memorial service for Tom and Nancy in the future in Greenwich, CT. My condolences to Coach Deneen's family and friends. He was a nice man and one time when I pitched for him,he rubbed my back between innings because of a rib cage injury I had from gym class. He did not say a word, just nursed me thru a complete game. Great 2 handed set shot too. The world is a lesser place now that he's gone. Thank you coach, Mike Catalano

To Mr. Dineen's Family: I am so very sorry for your loss. He was my science teacher at Central Junior High 45 years ago and one of my all time favorites. He always seemed so glad to have us there in his classroom that I always loved being there! He was a great teacher and certainly a wonderful man. He touched many lives and will never be forgotten. Tom Deneen was my Central middle school science teacher in 8th grade. He was a perfect model for me as a young man. He encouraged science learning and sports. He was a dapper dresser and I especially was fond of the 'taps' he wore on his shoes and asked my mother to get me a set! Seldom do people come into this world like Tom who quietly and perfectly influence generations. Thank you Tom!

He was a wonderful man, I remember him from coaching baseball at Greenwich High. I was the "manager" of the boys baseball team in Greenwich. He was always protective of us and kind. Sad to hear of his passing. My prayers and thoughts are with his family.

dave and tom;

your dad was a tenacious competitor as a baseball player and coach. I saw him play in the Stamford twilight league long before he became ghs coach in the 70's; ferocious line drive hitter to all fields who won the batting championship that year; I played for him at ghs and remember your mom always in the stands cheering us on; your parents were fine teachers and parents who positively influenced our lives in a much more "innocent era" of high school life; I have talked to several of my teammates of that time and we are all saddened; please try to publicize the tribute to your dad's life happening in Greenwich in the future; i'm sure he is united with your mom because I have never seen two people more respectful and loving toward each other

be strong and God bless you'

Mr. Deneen taught science to us with Mr. Casarin and Mr, Kelley. He had great patience and was very encouraging to us students - always telling us we could succeed greatly if we wanted it bad enough. All this 47 years ago but the memories are clear - not because I have a great memory but because Mr. Deneen was such a great teacher and person.

Tom & David-
I am so sorry to have learned of your father's passing. I was fortunate to have him as a teacher at CJHS. I also knew your mother from Jullian Curtiss School. Any student who was fortunate to have your father as a teacher and/or coach was truly blessed.

Dear Dave,

I am so very sorry to hear about your dad. I got goosebumps reading his obituary, especially about him going to Steve Young's induction, what an honor! Your dad sounded like a great man & I truly wish I had met both your parents.

I wanted to let you know that it was such a wonderful photo of you and him at his Hall of Fame induction last month.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I hope to make the memorial in Greenwich when you have it.

Wishing you peace and all the best!

Love your friend,
