LYNN SNYDER Obituary

LYNN J. SNYDER, 75, of Huntington, passed away Monday morning, May 15, 2017, in Huntington. He was born in Bloomington, Illinois, on March 6, 1942, and was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle Eldred Snyder and Gertrude Louise (Frazier) Snyder. Dr. Snyder grew up in Illinois, where he was a high school multi-letterman in baseball, basketball, football and track and field. He attended the University of Illinois, where he received his B.S. degree in Management in 1964. He was a member and president of Theta Chi Fraternity, where he also served as president of the Inter Fraternity Council. He was MVP of the University of Illinois intramural football team. Upon graduation, Dr. Snyder served in the U.S. Army, where he was first in his class at Ft. Lee, Virginia (1964-66) and promoted to 1st Lieutenant. Returning to the University of Illinois, he received his Masters of Education in 1969 and his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology in 1978. Dr. Snyder began his career at the University of Illinois in 1966 as systems and procedures analyst in the Office of Admissions and Records and served as assistant dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences from 1969 to 1972. He was Assistant Athletic Director at the University of Illinois from 1972-78 and Associate Athletic Director from 1978-79. In 1979, he moved with his family to Huntington to become the Athletic Director at Marshall University. Dr. Snyder made a huge impact on Marshall University Athletics during his six-year tenure, hiring Coach Rick Huckabay to take The Herd to the NCAA Basketball tournament and multiple Southern Conference Championships; hiring Coach Stan Parrish to lead Marshall to its first winning football season (1984) since the 1970 plane crash; and helping to propel the football program toward eventual national prominence. He left Marshall in 1985 to become Athletic Director at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, where he served until 1990. From 1990 until 1996, Dr. Snyder operated his own business in Salem, Oregon, and worked as a sports consultant for the firm Clifton Gunderson in Peoria, Illinois. He then joined the Athletic Department at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he served as Senior Associate Athletic Director before retiring to Huntington in 2003. Lynn was a wonderful person and fraternity brother. In fact it was he that recruited me to join Theta Chi at the University of Illinois and I so much enjoyed knowing him in those years.
I ended up moving to Oregon myself shortly after I graduated and was married. When i heard he had become athletic director at Oregon State, I contacted him and we had lunch with Steve Carter another fraternity brother who was by chance working for the same insurance company I was.
About 5 years ago,I started trying to find out where he was after he left Oregon State, hoping he was still in Oregon. Today I learned of his passing and was so sorry that I hadn't made more of an effort to find him earlier.
I want to say hello to Louisa, and express how sorry I am to hear of Lynn's loss.

To the family of Lynn Shields. My name is Dan Spelbring. Based on the system in place at Mt. Vernon Twp. HS during the late 50's, Lynn and I were "locker neighbors" from the fall of 1956 until our graduation 1960. We also shared several classes together during those years. I have many good Memories of the years in Mt. Vernon and Lynn figured in many of those memories. He will be missed, not only by you, his family, but also by the other members of the Mt. Vernon Twp. HS class of 1960.

Dear Lynn Snyder Family,

Sorry to hear of the loss of your husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. Take comfort in knowing that Lynn led a great and successful life. And know that he lives on eternally in our next life.

I was a high school classmate and have great memories of his many athletic skills. I saw Lynn at our 55th HS reunion for the first time in 55 years. His memory will live on in the lives of many.

Aunt Louesa and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Uncle Lynn was a great man who along with his great list of career accomplishments was wealthy beyond belief in family and love. I cherish the memories we all share and am so thankful that I knew this man. My heart goes out to you all and I wish I could be there for you.

Dearest Snyder family. I am so sorry for your loss and am sending you all warm thoughts. Please know I am thinking of you and wish I could be there to celebrate the life of such an amazing man.

We would drive from DC to Philly to see Lynn and Louesa several times a year, and every time they would open their doors wide for us. After dinner, Lynn was always quick and ready with the Trivial Pursuit or Pictionary box. Sometimes we'd play for hours. We'd laugh until it hurt.

Lynn's sharp wit; sly, dry sarcasm; encyclopedic knowledge of sports and sports history; and his passion for discussing politics will be memories we carry with us forever.
