MERIDETH WISWELL Obituary

MERIDETH PRICE WISWELL, a World War II veteran and retired Marshall University law professor, passed away April 7 in the Huntington home that his father built, where he was born and lived his entire life. Born Dec. 26, 1919, to Merideth P. and Tensia Wiswell, he earned his bachelor's degree from Washington & Lee University, where he was treasurer of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He received his doctor of laws degree from the University of Michigan, a master of laws degree from Yale University and a master of divinity degree from Claremont School of Theology. He began practicing law in Huntington in 1949 and in 1953 married the love of his life, Helen Simpson Tyree, whom he cherished until her death in 1993. In 1970 he joined the faculty of Marshall, where he taught business and finance law for 17 years, serving for several years as department chairman. He served in World War II as a first lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, flying "the hump" over the Himalayas as a navigator, and attained the rank of major in the Air Force Reserve. He nurtured an avid interest in history, geology and the arts, and he excelled as a woodworker, carving intricate designs on the furniture he created. He is survived by nephew Milton Tyree of Louisville, Ky., and nieces Patricia Hillman of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Helen Anders of Austin, Texas. The family wishes to thank his faithful caregivers; Eddy, Lori, Lisa, Laura, Lynnie, Nancy, Treasa and Kenny, as well as Michael and others from Cabell Huntington Home Health and Dr. Nair. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 12 at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary by Rev. Mark Conner. A visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until service time. Interment at Woodmere Memorial Park immediately after the service. Family guestbook at www.klingelcarpenter.com.
