Edwin Elliott Obituary

MATTOON -World War II Army Airforces Staff Sgt. Edwin C. "Mike" Elliott, age 24, formerly of Mattoon, IL, was killed May 10, 1944 in Corsica, Italy as a result of a non-combat related crash of the B-25 bomber he was aboard. More than six decades later, military search and recovery teams were able to locate and identify his remains so that they may be returned to his family. The aircraft carrying SSgt. Elliott's remains, escorted by his two great nephews, also veterans, will depart from a military facility in Hawaii and arrive at the Lambert Airport in St. Louis, MO on Monday, May 10, 2010. Family will be waiting to receive them, accompanied by the Ft. Leonard Wood Military Honor Guard, and will follow in procession to the funeral home. A funeral service in his honor will begin at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 with Pastor Ray Roberts officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Full military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the Ft. Leonard Wood Honor Guard. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, 12:00(noon) to 1:00 p.m., at the funeral home. SSgt. Elliott was born January 11, 1920, in Breckenridge County, Kentucky, the son of Levi and Belle (Hardway) Elliott. He currently is survived by one brother, Glenn Elliott and wife Sue of Mattoon, IL; two sisters-in-law, Mae Elliott of Charleston, IL, and Norma Elliott of Mattoon, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
