Craig Pound Obituary

Published by Decatur Herald & Review on Sep. 18, 2011.
BUFFALO GROVE - Craig Warren Pound, age 43, passed away peacefully, following a double battle with a right brain cancer and left brain stroke at 1030 pm on 14 September 2011. His family was present at the moment of death at the Highland Park Nursing and Rehab Center near Lake Michigan in the northern suburb of Chicago. Craig was a six and one-half year (2005-11) survivor of his brain cancer, Glioblastoma, which is a remarkable achievement in itself. Craig was born on 16 July 1968 in Elk Grove Village and attended local schools in both Mt. Prospect and Wheeling IL. He was a graduate of Wheeling High School in 1987. In January 2007, just two years after his initial bout with brain cancer, he graduated at the top of his class from a two year course in the culinary arts at the Robert Morris College in downtown Chicago, another remarkable achievement. Craig is the youngest of three sons, including brothers Scott of Brownsburg IN and Clark of Lake Villa IL. His parents are Joan and Joe Pound of Sullivan IL. He is the husband of Wendy of Buffalo Grove IL and the father of their two beautiful children, Grace (age 8) and Ahren (age 10). Craig & Wendy were married in Fox Lake IL on 19 August 1995. During the 1990's Craig, with his wife Wendy, owned and operated a Verlo Mattress franchise for several years in Champaign IL. Prior to his most recent three month hospital/nursing home stay he was employed as a NW suburban Chicago taxi driver due to his difficulties with an attack of Plantar Fasciitis in both feet, unrelated to his brain cancer. His last work position was at Ted's Montana Grill in Glenview IL, where in March of this year he was selected as employee of the month. On 15 May of this year he played 18 holes of golf with his father and brother. Three weeks later he entered the hospital and nursing facilities until his death. Funeral arrangements will be a celebration of life visitation held at Kolssak Funeral Home in Wheeling IL on Wednesday from 3 to 730 pm followed by a religious service. His ashes will be interred at a cemetery in Arlington Heights IL. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Craig Pound Family Support Fund in c/o Joan & Joe Pound. I was so very surprised & saddened when I learned about Craig's passing. Fond memories of GREAT times at the bridge and the dam with the "Zombies", the best mullet EVER, his white RX-7 (I think? ca. 198?), his "Don Johnson" outfits and Craig always . . . ALWAYS smiling. His infectious laughter is still audible. Thank you, Rick, for sharing your wonderful friends. Thank you, Skull, for letting me know such sad, sad news when it happened. I appreciate it more than you can know.

My thoughts and prayers have been with his family and lifelong friends, hoping his passing makes memories brighter & clearer, more special and even more cherished. I know mine are. I forgot . . . perhaps too much. I won't forget again.

Always remember to love deeply & fully and live life with passion, knowing time is simply too short.

Truly,
Beverly Janes

PS - Is their a Foundation or Organization for medical research to which a donation can be made in Craig's name?

Wendy and Family,
I was saddened to hear of Craig's passing. Craig and I worked together at Verlo Mattress Company back in the 90's. Fond memories of those times always bring a smile to my face. May the Lord give you and your family strength and comfort though these difficult days ahead. My very deepest sympathy.

Wendy & family,
I was heartbroken to hear of Craig's death. His easy humor and simple friendliness made him a joy to have in the Verlo family, and a favorite of the ASG staff. I will never forget his grin! Please know that your family is in my prayers Wendy.

When someone younger than us passes it is like a loud, clear bell that rings just once and catches us by surprise. A slowly reverberating reminder that our lives are meant to be lived, every day, minute by minute. There is no time for complacency, passivity, safety or fear; as days disolve to decades while not paying rapt attention. While I only knew Craig for about a decade, we traveled this nation together and worked side-by-side helping dozens of people launch new businesses. And I count myself as a lucky witness to the marriage of Craig and lovely Wendy, sixteen years ago. The long-lasting impressions Craig made on me included true passion, boundless energy and an awareness of life that many people seem to ignore, yet it's these impressions that I'll keep as a constant reminder to truly live our lives. God Bless you Wendy, Grace, Ahren and the entire family as you carry on in your lives.

I have lost touch with Craig over the past ten years or so, but he remains vivid in my memories and alive in his contributions. Craig was beyond special, he was a genuine open heart who would do anything to help.

To The Pound Family..
So sad to hear about Craig and the struggle he went through. Cancer is a terrible illness and seeing someone you love fight through it is difficult. Craig was always positive and strong growing up and I am sure he was the same later in life. I know he is in a better place. Rest in Peace Craig. Sending the family my thoughts and many prayers to stay strong and hold on to all of the wonderful memories you were blessed to have with Craig.

To Wendy and the Pound family - I haven't seen Craig in over 20 years, and just now heard of his passing, and I'm very sad sending prayers to you from Scottsdale, AZ. Rush will always remind me of you and I have lots of memories in high school with Mike & Mary Sullivan, Jim Walker, Peglow - enjoying life and living to be young! I hope you're in a better place CRAIG - and you're forever young!

Craig,

You may be gone, but you certainly will remain in our hearts unforgotten. I ponder countless times of pure laughter being around you, and even in this sorrowing time, I you still remain to keep a smile on my face from being the person you were. You were a great person, and full of life, and I will truly, honestly miss those missed opportunties for future laughter with you. But thank you for a lifetime of funny memories! God Bless you, Wendy, the kids especially, and all your loved ones! Until we meet again my friend!

I will never forget Craig, his smile, his kind nature. And even though I haven't seen him in many years, I will always remember our time in Jr. High & High School. I was crazy about him, and was so excited when we dated, only for a short time, but always remained good friends no matter what. Clark & my older brother played baseball together in HS, so he too was shocked and saddened with the news. I want to send the Pound family my deepest sympathies, and will keep you all in my prayers. Craig was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed.

Pound family- heartfelt sympathies on the loss of one of our own "chruch group". He was an amazing person and an AWESOME friend who always had a smile on his face, a funny ad-lib, and just a cool person to be around. I will rember him fondly always.

Thoughts and prayers to the Pound Family....

To my friend Craig:
Some of my fondest memories in High School were the times we shared, the Billy Idol dress ups and lips sync contests and also on the baseball field. There was never a dull or boring moment when you were around. You lived life with such a passion! You will always be remembered in my heart!
