MONTGOMERY, ADELYN ANNA. 1922 - 2011 Adelyn Anna Montgomery, a former teacher, artist, and homemaker, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011. The former Cutler Bay, Florida, resident was 89. Adelyn Anna Peterson was born February 21, 1922 in Herman, Nebraska, to Ernest Christian and Pauline Catherine (Huber) Peterson and was one of seven children. She grew up on a farm in Washington County, Nebraska, and graduated from Millard High School as Valedictorian of her class in May 1939. She attended Wayne State Teacher's College for 1-1/4 years. She taught school for three years, worked for Woodman of the World Life Insurance Co. for one year, and in the US Signal Corps as Cryptographic Clerk during World War II. During the war, she corresponded with her future husband, Floyd Woodrow Montgomery. They married in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on November 15, 1945, after he returned from overseas service. She was a homemaker and taught in a rural school near Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska, after she was married. She and Floyd also farmed 160 acres (Ernest C. Peterson's farm) near Ft. Calhoun until her husband was called back to active duty during the Korean War and sent to Okinawa. The family lived near Pinecastle Air Force Base in Orlando, then Homestead Air Force Base, and ultimately retired to their home in Cutler Bay. Throughout her years as a homemaker, she displayed her sewing and crocheting skills through her clothing creations. Teaching children was always a passion that she demonstrated in her volunteer work with Girl Scouts, Sunday School, and other youth organizations. After raising four daughters, Adelyn got her AA (Associates in Arts degree) from Miami-Dade Community College in 1978 and her BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) from Florida International University on December 12, 1980. She loved the arts and applied her creativity to oil painting and sculpture. After Floyd's retirement, they enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii and Alaska. She was a lifelong fan of Elvis Presley and his music. She was an active member of St. Thomas by the Bay Lutheran Church of Palmetto Bay, Florida. She is survived by her daughters Paula Kay Montgomery of Baltimore, MD, Marta Sue (Steve) Villacorta of Ft. Lauderdale, Debra Ann (Mark) Goodrich of Ft. Pierce, and Janet Lee (Richard) Vari of San Diego, CA; grandchildren Lauren Michelle (Carl) Moffi, Rob Hugh Cox Vari, Matthew Thor Vari, and Amanda Marie Vari; sister Marilyn Petersen; and many nieces and nephews.
