BETTY COUSINS Obituary

COUSINS, BETTY. As Betty would put it, her "product expiration date went past due" October 27, 2010 when she passed away at the age of 90. She was born May 31, 1920 in Racine, Wisconsin, and moved to Miami in the late forties with her husband, Bill Cousins. She worked for the Miami-Dade Police Department as an executive secretary for 30 years, where her sharp mind was challenged daily and her intellect and wit was treasured by her co-workers. She retired at the age of 70 and realized many of her dreams: Alaskan cruises, visits to Las Vegas, bowling three times a week until she was 83, volunteering at the Doral Open, reading mystery novels, screaming at the Miami Dolphins, doing jigsaw puzzles and playing (and winning) Scrabble with her daughter during their thrice weekly happy hours. Predeceased by son, Dennis Michael Cousins and husband, W.J. Cousins, Jr., Betty is survived by daughter Sharyne Mettee and son-in-law Mykle, son William James Cousins, III, daughter-in- law Suzette and their six children, Megan, Michelle, William, Robert, Kathy and Alyssa, her brother, Steven Maritch, and daughter-in- law Madelyn Mettee Pedraza. I too was fortunate to spend time with Betty, my dear friend Sharyne's mother, when I lived in Miami. I was always made to feel most welcome into her home and her extended family. Betty was a generous and upbeat person who set a shining example in that she lived her life with tremendous gusto. I shall always remember her fondly.

I had the privilege of working with Betty on my very first job at Metro Homicide in Miami. She helped me tremendously with the challenges and gruesome details of the job. As she would always say "Life is a bowl of cherry pits" , something I never forgot, along with her good humor and no-nonsense personality. She will always live on in my memory as a very special person and teacher. My condolences to all of the family. May she rest in peace.

Betty took many of us under her wings when we first arrived in Homicide. She was trully an angel then as I am sure she is now.

Betty was my 2nd Mom, I enjoyed every minute I was able to spend with her. She would make my day reading the paper together doing crossword puzzles and watching her favorite game shows on TV. I loved her dearly and miss her. I was honored to be a part of her life.

Betty Cousins was a fabulous woman and a dear friend. My husband & I shared many Thanksgivings and other meals and get togethers with Betty, Sharyne, Mykle and other friends. It was always a treat spending time with Betty. We spent many happy hours working on jigsaw puzzles, talking and laughing and sometimes just being silly. She was a very special, very funny, bright, beautiful and loving woman. We will miss her!

Betty will be missed by our family. She was always FUN! I loved to look out from the bandstand and see her dancing in the ailes with her daughter, Sharyne. At any party, there was always a crowd around her. Gone but not forgotten. Our condolences to her family.

Without Betty many of us wouldn't have survived. As Marshall stated she was the glue that held the place together. Our world is a more sad place without her. She will be missed and our prayers are with the family.

If there was such a thing as an MVP of Homicide in the 1970's and 1980's, it wouldn't be a detective or a captain, it would be Betty Cousins because she was the glue that kept it together, long before computers and automated records. Betty (or BC as she was known) was THE computer for homicide, and a fun personality to work with besides. A great lady. My condolences to the family.

May 29, 2011

To the Cousins family, I know your hearts are filled with sorry, but what great memories of a great lady that you share will go on forever. I knew Betty since 1967 and honestly say she was one of the most gifted assets homicide had. Her knowledge and memory of cases helped many a detective, including myself. Betty, may you continue to shine you face upon us from ahigh. Wayne McCarthy

Betty was a great secretary and friend to her boys and girls. Her record keeping prior to overtime resulted in the Homicide members receiving their past due monies for OT.

Great lady who will be fondly remembered.
