PATRICK CATANIA Obituary

CATANIA, PATRICK MICHAEL, "The Legend", was born September 7, 1949 to Frank and Beatrice Catania. Patrick, a resident of Coral Gables, passed away on May 24, 2010 while courageously fighting a short but arduous battle with cancer at Dr. Ursula Jacob's Klinik in Germany. Patrick was larger than life and has left a deep void in the lives of those he touched. He is survived by Susie Catania, law student at the University of Miami; Danny Catania, art-ist, and public insurance adjuster for the family company (children of Susan Loveland); Frankie Catania, preschooler; and step-daughter Sarah Jane Rogers, middle-school student (children of his loving companion Jackie Vihlen); his future son-in- law Daniel Odess, Operating Manager of East Coast Public Adjusters, and his niece and nephew Nicolina and Carmine Venezia. Patrick, an entrepreneur, was the President of East Coast Public Adjusters and East Coast Appraisers for over twenty-five years where he was a passionate fighter and true advocate for the policy holder's rights. Patrick was instrumental in affecting the in- terpretation of insurance law in the state of Florida, on behalf of the insured. Patrick also invented the revolutionary software result- ing in the foundation of MySmartClaims.com, an innovative system for adjusting online insurance claims throughout the United States. Patrick's passions included family, cooking, cars, and traveling the world. The mass will be held at St. Theresa's Church of The Little Flower, June 4th at 2:30 p.m. 2711 Indian Mound Trail, Coral Gables, followed by graveside services at Woodlawn Cemetery North, 3260 Southwest 8th Street, Miami. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to Patrick Catania's Tribute at St. Jude Children's Hospital (www.stjude- tribute.org). Please pray for our beloved Patrick, may he rest in peace. Susan, My thoughts are with you and your family. You have two beautiful children who are now adults. One of my fondest memories of Pat was a weekend I spent playing war with squirtguns in the rain. Of course, Pat wanted a bigger squirtgun!

Goobies Forever!

Susie, Danny, Jackie Susan and gorgeous little Frankie,
The mass was beautiful, just the way Pat wanted it I understand. I was comforted that he had found the time to seek out a wonderful Priest, while it made me sad it gave me comfort. And it gave me comfort to see everybody he loved sourround him in such a beautiful church. God Bless you guys, as I know he blessed Pat with such a loving family, and I felt the presence of God and Pat in that beautiful church. Stay strong. He is counting on it. I am glad you are all so close.
Love,
Gayle Samson

I met Pat when I applied for an adjuster's job in 1991. He offered me the job which I turned down. Then he asked me on a date which I accepted. We always had so much fun together and shared many fun times, going to Heat games, the Lipton, great restaurants (the first was Pietro's where Pietro continued to treat me like family even when I wasn't with Patrick). Pat always got the VIP treatment at the South Beach clubs and I loved going with him. He called me "Me' Lady" and treated me like one always. He was a generous, caring and loving person. When he bought one of his convertible Mercedes he drove right over and let me drive it all over. We had many wonderful talks. I gave him a pocketsized version of his favorite book The Art of War. He taught me much as well. I ran into him not long ago and was happy to see he had found someone of quality to "settle" down with and was so in love and so blessed to have another child. I remember how he talked about his two young children when we dated. He was so very proud. I wish all the family peace and comfort. It is a very big loss. He was a big personality and added so much. I never forgot him and am so sad his life ended so young. He really put a lot into life and all he did it is good to see he got a lot out of it as well.. I was very happy to know he was so fond of me and enjoyed our time together I know I did. I will keep you ALL in my prayers.

I worked for Pat back in 1999. Thanks to his encouragement, I became a public adjuster with his support the same year I was hired. He was a great man, teacher and mentor. When he was happy, his mood was contagious. I have never met a more generous man in my life. He is one of the few people in this industry that enjoyed sharing his knowledge and was like a father figure to me. On my second day on the job, he gave me a copy of The Art of War, with a dedication that read, "Read it, Learn it and Live it." He told me all of those principles would come in handy when adjusting claims. I left his firm after three years. He took me to lunch and I remember his last words to me were, "Good Luck Kid." I know there was so much more I could have learned from him, and I know he would have been happy to teach and guide me. I
am still a public adjuster and I feel Pat taught me how to do it ethically and fight for my clients. I owe him a lot. He opened doors for me I did not know existed.

To Susie & Danny, you guys were still too young to remember me, but your dad was the best boss I ever had. I am sorry for your loss and I know this must be devastating for you and your family.
You are all in my prayers.

Susan,

I hope that you and the kids find some solace in knowing that you did everything humanly possible to find treatment for Pat's illness.
It sounds as if the trip to Germany was the right decision to make and that the care and comfort you found there made Pat's last days peaceful for all of you.
May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.

The bright light of life is best known in darkness,as it is not what you see but what you cannot see that matters most. Pat always made light from darkness and always helped us to know we did not know.!
His gifts were our blessings.
We always dealt at arms length, but as the years passed our business was from a frienship of loyalty. He always played the role as "tough Guy" but PAT you never fooled me....You are and always will be a great friend who showed me through our years together what loyalty meant. We shared hardships alike and I thank-you for all the love, wisdom and guidance you shared. For now I say ...we will meet again
Love and condolences to the Catania Family and to Jackie,Sarah,Frankie, and all who were fortunate to know Pat

To Jackie, Susie, Danny, Franky, Sarah, Susan:
I am sorry for your loss. All of us that knew him feel the same because he treated us all as his family. Smart, caring (beyond all belief sometimes) and always available to lend advice. I needed that from him a lot. He accepted all people for who they are which is the trait I will remember most.

You all made him the happiest...that is what he always told me and remember that every time you miss him. Be strong family...you have all of the rest of us to help you.

Pat and I were married in 1976 when I was 22 and he was a mere 26 years old.We had a whirlwind life full of wonderful misadventures [when Pat wasn't busy doing needlepoint]that would probably raise a few eyebrows...There is the accounting of the famous tiger shark episode that has morphed a bit over the years [especially Pat's version], but this as as I recall. We were diving the great North Wall of Grand Cayman and had about 10 minutes to do a nondecompression dive at about 118 ft.At that depth, the airstream bubbles are the size of a person and you also lose the colors of the rainbow leaving you with only shades of black and greay. The guide was in front,I was in the middle, and Pat was behind me.Visability was crystal clear and we could see the dive boat bobbing up and down, anchored 85 ft to the ocean floor of the continental shelf. At that moment,a 12-20 ft [depending on whose version it is]tiger shark appeared out the blue, hunching its back which is a sign of agression, took a bead on us and came towards us in slow-mo.The guide bolted,I turned and looked at Pat whose eyes were as large as saucers, and at that moment,I knew that I wasn't going to die of a shark attack, but rather CLAUSTROPHOBIA because all of a sudden I had all of those PSI's squishing against me.I became very busy trying to wiggle out of my wetsuit. Now this is where the story changes a bit, with rumors of Pat going into shark attack defense position mode, straddling his scuba tank in his arms to butt the nose of the MONSTEROUS BEAST.What I can tell you with certainty, however, was that the 3 of us met up in the rocks, our 10 minutes was almost up, and the guide made Pat go up the anchor line,by himself, one ft per second, and I will never forget his BRAVERY making that ascension, looking to his left, looking to his right, then sort of putting his legs together the best way he could [I believe that is the true shark attack defense position]. He was so brave and so alone in that vast ocean.I was mightely impressed.

Our 15 yrs together were spent on numerous sailing episodes on the Alpha Centauri, the Bellatrix, and the Mistaken Identity.Pat was the intrepid Generalisimo and I was the incomprable helmswoman-lol!Our legendary crew included Elton Eastman,Dennis Valdez,Jim Moser and Alan Loy [RIP].We made Columbus Day Regatta history time and time again back when that was an honor and we even earned a national television story on PM Magazine by Jerry Pennacoli about our last sloop, the 42 ft Mistaken Identity.

Pat and I have 2 beautiful and extraordinary kids together,Susie and Danny. You have all probably heard the story of Susie and the rolex when she was born, but do you recall when Danny was born and Pat bought him an athletic cup support when he was to be circed?LOL! Soon I will be gaining the most wonderful son-in-law ever,Daniel Odess. Two Susie's and two Danny's.Susie and Danny also have a beautiful brother Frankie by Pat's most loving companion Jackie Vihlen.Pat was very lucky to have known Jackie and Jackie was lucky to have known Pat.Family has always been the core of Pat's existence and he always did his best to avail them of every opportunity in life.He cherished them unconditionally and they cherished him likewise.

In Pat's final hours,I never saw a person fighting so hard to live, because life was so dear to him.I flashed back a hundred times to the tiger shark episode -his bravery, going off by himself in that vast blue sea.Pat was now venturing off on a new journey as he was leaving his earthly ties behind. In true obstinate Catania fashion,he fought every step of the way, fighting to not leave with his beloved, deceased father who had obviously come for him.Life on earth meant that much to him.We are all grieving deeply for him and he will be sorely missed.

Always,Susan

While it has been too long since I have seen he, Jacking, Sarah and Frankie, I think of them often and was very sad to hear that his amazing life had come to a far to quick ending. In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Pat is the King of all Kings! A true friend and could make you smile just coming at you.He loved life and lived it to the fullest.Everyday was Christmas and his family was his pride and joy.He bought a Ferrari just to take little Frankie for rides with the top down.Father and son...as it should be.Don't mess with #55 he has always been a winner.Back in the day Pat was a real "clothes hound" and the Miracle Mile shuttered at his success, wearing shorts and a tee shirt everyday and living the dream. When Pat spoke people listened. When my pop was ill,Pat always checked on him because he too was a U.S Marine. He told me that they were brothers.Once a Marine always a Marine.Semper Fi my brother. We'll always be missing you. They broke the mold.Keep the good advise coming...I'm listening.
Your little A.D.D brother.

I have never met Pat. However, in all these years that I have known Susan, I have come to know through her and her children, how wonderful of a man, father, friend, and businessman he was. He raised his children well as evidenced by how well his daughter Susie has turned out; now in UM Law School after doing so much good, solid work during the last Presidential elections and helping with the business...and Danny, the handsome and ever talented young man who appears to have found his calling in the Arts and per his mother, can 'whip' out an excellent meal for the whole family in a short amount of time.

I have always lived by the tenet that how one dies is a reflection of how one has lived one's life.

From some of Susan's notes, he was surrounded by his family - his children and the two women who loved him dearly in the Klinik in Germany, amidst the peace and tranquility of the surrounding Black Forest area, and it was there that he went peacefully.

May the family be ever comforted at this time and strengthened evermore by the love that held them all together.

My Dearest Patrick, you will always be my true love. I remember the moment I fell in love with you, just like it was yesterday. You gave me the best 8 years of my life, and the most beautiful son to remember you by always. I will cherish every memory of us. Thank you for being my rock, my supporter, my best friend, my mentor, and my love.

To the children, the bond between parent and child will be always... May you find comfort in my poem.

"ALWAYS"

For every tear you cry,
A drop of rain will return to make you smile,
To touch you and to comfort you,
For your heart will not let him die...
For every rainbow you see,
His hands will reach out to you
And hold you in his arms,
For he will always be...
For every sad thought you allow,
His memory will sail with the wind
Through your mind forever,
And he will always be alive somehow...
For the greatest love lives within you,
And every breath you take will calm you
And his hands will touch you tenderly,
His existence will shine through...
For your Dad there will never be an end
Your love was his greatest moment
And he will always be with you,
Your Angel, your Father, your best Friend,
ALWAYS...

Sleep well Pat.

I'll never forget all the good times we had. I remember the day Susie was born like it was yesterday, and he ran out to buy her a Rolex. We argued for hours because I was afraid they might not be in style in fifteen years, but as usual, he was right. From the Christenings, to the birthday parties, the good times and the bad, he was a true friend who always had your back. He was so proud of his children it was crazy. From Susie being the greatest debater ever to come out of Carrolton, to Danny's art, he was proud as you can be. The last time I had a real sit down conversation with him was when he came over to show me a picture Danny had made. I can't remember all the details, but it was about a trip to Italy and there was a part in it that expressed how he couldn't bear to be seperated from Frankie when he was away. He was so in love with that painting. Family was everything to him. And finally, I'm sorry I forgot your
Mother's sausage and peppers on land Columbus Day 1983. You never let me live it down. ~Danni's Christening~ better than any scene from the Godfather or theSoprano's.
I will miss you so much. My heart is broken and so is Ronnie's. You really can count your friends on one hand. In your case probably two. Love you'all. I'm so sorry for all of you. This is so, so, sad. Hang in there everybody.
Love,

A great Loss to the Insurance community. I will deeply miss my Friend and Mentor. I am a better Public Adjuster for just training under him. I always told everyone I was the 2nd best Public Adjuster in the world. If they had to ask who was #1, I gladly informed them who was truly #1 and those that know me know I am not qualified to even carry Pat's briefcase.
