Paula Church Obituary

Paula Horn Church
Miami Lakes, FL
Paula passed away peacefully on April 28, 2011. Her husband Tom and beloved dogs Kasey and Jackson were at her side.
She was born in Mt. Kisco, NY and grew up in Florida and Northern Virginia. She graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in Geography and later earned a Masters Degree in Urban Planning from Florida State University. Paula remained a life long and very passionate Miami Hurricanes fan. Over the years some of her best times were tailgating at Hurricane football games at the Orange Bowl with family and friends.
Early in her career Paula worked in Broward County and later became a partner in an environmental consulting firm. She closed out her career as a supervisor in the Miami-Dade County Department of Planning and Zoning where she was able to merge her passion for the environment with helping to bring about smart growth in Miami-Dade County. She was very effective in finding solutions to challenging problems and was widely respected by her peers and others with whom she interacted.
She will be greatly missed by her husband of 34 years, Tom Church; her sister Erica Horn Cecich and husband Tom Cecich; sister Jenifer S. Weintraub and husband Gerry; brother Rodger Horn and wife Diana; as well as her beloved dogs Kasey and Jackson. She is also survived by nieces and nephews Laurie Sullivan and husband Michael, Allie Cecich, Chad Horn, Kyle Horn, Dwan Horn and Roen Horn; her great nephew Finn Sullivan; and her beloved Aunt Alice Treacy. She will also be missed by her dear friends Bob Usherson and Suzanne Martineau along with Mark Woerner and her many county co-workers.
Paula and her family were deeply touched by the outpouring of love and prayers for her during her year-long battle with ovarian cancer.
A memorial service is being planned for later in the month of May. Paula requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations in her name be made to the Cancer Society of your choice.

I am so sorry to hear about Paula's passing-on. I will never-ever forget Paula!! She was one unforgettable Woman!! I will always miss her!! My heart bleeds for what happened, to Paula, and what she has been-through!! I am still very shocked that "GOD" called her Home!! I certainly did not expect such news. May the "LORD" Spiritually draw her near "HIS" Spiritual Side, and may the "LORD" Spiritually keep her, maintain her, and hold her in "HIS" Spiritual Hands, and Arms; filled and covered with "HIS" Precious, Almighty, Spiritual, All Heavenly, All Powerful "Blood!!!" And may the "LORD" look-after her, maintain her, and keep her safe, and secure, beneath "HIS" Spiritual Wings!!! Paula is now Resting In Everlasting Peace, with our Heavenly "FATHER!!!" I am certain that she is now watching all of us, from above, with a big beautiful smile. With the very little time that I have known her, those little memories will always maintain and keep my heart lit, with the Everlasting Lights of Heaven!!!

Paula was one of the fairest of "Dave's Damsels". I reel through the 'photographs' and 'videos' of my mind, I can see Paula's smile and hear her laughter. She was always upbeat and had a sunny disposition. I don't know the Paula that she had become over the years. Somethings, core values, don't change. I am sure she lifted others along her journey. I worked with Paula at the Miami-Dade Planning and Zoning Department for four years until I decided to move back to my homeland. I want to express my sincere sympathy at this most difficult time to Paula’s family and friends. I know no words can really help ease the loss of such a great loss, but please know that you are very close in my prayers.

My Aunt, Paula "Proon" Church will be dearly missed by her family. She was like a second mother to me in my years in school at the University of Miami. She was one of the most kind and caring people I have ever known and I will miss her beyond words. Thanks to all of you for the well-wishes.

Greetings and blessings to Tom Church and members of Paula’s extended family.

I want to extend my sincere condolences at this time of loss. During my years at Miami-Dade County DERM, I was in contact with Paula at various times regarding planning and environmental issues. I remember Paula as a public servant dedicated to the protection of the public health and the environment.

May Almighty God grant you all comfort and strength.

I spent a year with Tom and Paula Church as an exchange student from 1993 to 1994. I was a spoiled 16-year old teenager from Germany who took a lot for granted. The whole Church family was always very welcoming and warm and in particular Paula was very cheerful and positive. Being far from home and occasionally suffering from little culture shocks I was always supported by Paula in those rare difficult moments. It was one of the best and most influential years of my life. I saw Paula last in 2009 and I feel very sad and shocked about her loss, because I had counted on seeing her again this summer in Florida. Sincerely, Kai Schramm

To Paula's family: I am pretty sure Paula and I went to high school together at Oakton High School in Vienna Va. I was in the Class of 1970. I recognized her picture in the paper today. As the years fly by, I often think back on those carefree years. I am so sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Mary McKeone Ellmore
