North Miami Store, summer of 1977

Please forgive the lateness of this message, but I just found out about Bob's passing. When I was in high school, I worked for Bob at the Miami River store as a "grunt" during the summer of 1976, then the next two summers at the North Miami store. I cherish the memories of those days. Bob assembled a great team, and was a great inspiration to all of us. I miss those days, and I will miss Bob.

To the Hewes Family, sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He was a truly passionate man about his boats and I fondly remember spending time in his red Bonefisher doing the"eye of the storm" with him. He was also one of the most honorable businessmen I have ever known and wounldn't be satisfied until his customer was happy. When I go to the Miami Boat Show I will be thinking of him...... Our family has know Bob and Ida from the very early days of Miami boating. We bought our last two boats from Bob. I still remember the smile on his face during one of our demo rides. He was carving circles and just smiled and said "isn't this amazing?" That was 20 years ago. You never forget Bob.

All,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. It was an honor to have been lucky enough in life to have met and learned from Bob Hewes
In the short time I was your OMC rep, Bob became a friend, teacher and an inspiration. In following years, it was always a pleasure to see and talk to Bob at the boat shows.
It was an honor to have known this great man.

Dear Ida,
It’s hard to imagine I first met, and then went to work for Bob at the Miami River shop 36 years ago. It’s even harder to know where to start in trying to tell what his mentoring and friendship has meant to me since then.
Without question he was a top-notch flats boat designer and builder, an ace fisherman, and a great photographer. He was a fair and caring boss, and a terrific example of what a husband and father should be. He loved life, and knew how to live it, and his easy smile, quick wit, and gift for telling tales of “the days” just drew people to him.
To me, he was always “Ol’ Dad”. He always let me know he admired my work, valued my opinion and supported my efforts in whatever direction they took me. Every time I had a chance to sit down and talk with him, I learned something new, and he was always eager to hear how things were going with me. He was definitely my “Ol’ Dad”.
I’m glad you and Bob had a chance to stop by our home on your way down to the Keys last year so that we were able to share just of bit of the hospitality you both always showed us. I will miss Bob greatly – already do, and I will never forget him.
Hope “Ol’ Dad” is enjoying endless perfect days on the water spinning tight circles into “the eye of the storm”.
With deep appreciation of a great man,
Bobby Shockey

Dear Ida and family,
A lifetime of memories for me, as a youngster my Dad taking me to the River store where the employees became like a Who's Who of the marine industry. How fortunate to be your friend so long, always greeted by kind compassionate words.

You both encouraged and sponsored us to join the Miami Water Ski Club in the '60s and so many other kindnesses.

I look forward to our Heavenly reunion when our Father says it's my time to join Bob in Glory.

Blessings and John 3:16

Bob will be sorely missed; he made a great contribution to those who enjoy the fishing/boating sport.

My prayers go out to the family, that they may know God's loving comfort at this time.

Not the news I was expecting to see on the Trade Journal. My first thoughts, foolishly, was maybe it's not him. His son-in-law's (Joel) posting sadly erased that doubt. My sincerest condolences. PopPop, may you rest in peace.

Dear Mrs. Hewes, Debbie, Joel and family, although I have only known Bob for about five years---I always loved talking about the early days of boating. Bob was a good client and became a good friend, he always loved to tell me the stories about the "dirty little boat" he built. He will definitely be missed by all that knew him, and the marine industry lost one of the last of the good guys! Rick Gibbs and staff

Dear Mrs. Ida Hewes,my thoughts and prayers go out to you and all of your family members.I had the honor to work for that GOOD MAN at the North Miami Ski Shop from 1974 to 1980. Started out washing boats and climbed the ladder to a outboard tech. I learned alot from that GOOD MAN at very young age of 14. He gave me a chance to learn the marine industry at all different angles,He even put me on a airplane to Brainerd Minnesota to repair a boat that Robbie Lanham sold at the famous Miami Boat Show.He gave me a good advice on life at a very young age of my life and will never forget .I wish I could be there for the memorial. My God Bless You and all the family.Dave Miller

My prayers and wishes to Ida and the family. I worked for Bob at the Miami River store. He taught me a great deal and was a true "Gentleman" in the Marine Industry. Helping Bob pioneer the Bonefish boats in 1970-1973 is a cherished memory for me.

Ida,
I still have the first Kevlar Redfisher that Bob built. It has long since been retired from everyday use,,a testament to the sport we love so much.
We traded for a new Jeep. He told me that boat was your favorite. I took that as one salesmen to another but there was one thing for sure, the passion, not only for his boats, but for his family, may Gods blessing be with you and your family Bill Bryan Winter Park, fl.

Dear Ida, Joel and Debbie, Lorrie and Jim, I wasn't around for long as a young Johnson Outboards rep, but Bob made a profound impression on me at the time. I will never forget his enthusiasm and knowledge, but most of all, how he treated everyone as a friend. We will all miss him.

Ida, you and Bob have been dear friends for over 50 years and we go back to when Sammy worked for Lou at the Miami River store. We came back to Miami after the military and worked again for the Hewes family until we left Miami in 1963. Bob will be missed by so many not only in the boating industry but just as a wonderful friend to all who met him. Love to you and the rest of the family in Miami.

Bob was one of the greats in so many ways. Besides his iconic status in the boating industry, Bob was a wonderful person to all.
My first job as a kid was working for Bob and Sonny at the River store. Little did I know at the time how fortunate I was to meet Bob and to get to know him. He had a great impact on my life and I will always be thankful. He was always upbeat, kind, and passionate about boats. Truely a great person. My condolences to you Ida, you have a wonderful family that will share Bob's memories through generations to come.
Smooth seas Bob and Merry Christmas!
