Bill Kaynor was a true and outstanding member of the "Greatest Generation". I am a member of that group also, but Bill and his brother Dick (Richard) were quiet leaders of stature and honor and good faith. Generous and useful, they were gentlemen in the best meaning of the word.

They served their country at risk of their lives; Dick as an ambulance driver in North Africa, Bill who flew as pilot in bombing raids over Germany, under attack by Nazi fighter planes.

Bill found his life's work as a lawyer in a major firm in New York, and even better, found his life's love Irene, who became his wife.

We send our sympathy to Irene and all others of Bill's family. We join with the many others who knew him, in remembrance of a kind and honorable friend.

We're a bit quieter than usual here in Quogue this weekend, remembering our friend Bill. When Bill stopped by for a cup of coffee, midway through his Sunday bike ride, we'd all sit right back down at the table, happy to enjoy his company. His visits were always special to us. We all miss him.
