Elmer Lewis Obituary

Given the Choices of the upcoming presidential election Jim decided death was a better option. He passed away on June 23, 2016, Everett, Wash. He was born to two stubborn farmers in Brady, Texas on January 31, 1925. He served in the US Army during WWll in the Pacific Theater as a paratrooper. (We know, pretty impressive) In 1947 he married D. Fern Austin. They spent 64 years together in nagging bliss. They moved several times over the years and finally settled in Machias, Wash. They had three children, Lynn (Susan) Lewis, Rita (Mike) Bonk, Rene (Mike) McKervey. They are the reason he balded so early in life. He worked as a barber for many years in Everett. Then went on to Weyerhaeuser and construction. He retired at the tender age of 86. In his free time he enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, gardening and Square dancing with his sweetheart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern; his daughter, Rita and his parents and siblings; along with most of his friends. He was 91 after all. He is survived by his son, Lynn and daughter, Rene; his ten grandchildren and 20ish great grandchildren. A very special thank you from the family to Vern and Joyce Rasmussen for their devoted friendship. Jim considered himself very lucky to have such wonderful people in his life. A Memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 8522 131st Ave SE in Snohomish, WA on July 9, 2016, at 10 a.m.

I didn't personally know Jim Lewis and I only met him in the newspaper that was spread over my kitchen table as I cracked Dungeness Crab for July 4th. I happen to glance at the obits and the first sentence grabbed my attention and a guffaw! I stopped cracking crab to read the seawater-soaked rest of Jim's obit, which I enjoyed SO much that I cut it out and decided to sign his guest book. Jim sounded like a great man and lived a full and loving life. We (me and my husband) also lived in Machias, so we wondered if maybe we had run into him at the little store or maybe the PYC. He must have been a pretty good guy; did his duty WWII paratrooper (yeah! I'm impressed!); married 64 years (I'm REALLY impressed); and fathered kids.

I know this is kind of weird that a total stranger would take the time to write all of this, but I feel like we missed meeting a really great man. I am sorry for your loss, as well as my own. I would have like to meet him in person.
