Goldie Wassam Obituary

Goldie Sophie Wassam

Goldie Sophie Wassam, 87, was born September 23, 1923 in Arlington, WA and died January 6, 2011 in Arlington, WA following an extended illness. She spent her early years living at Lake Goodwin. Her parents were Steven Herz of Kumrovec, Austria (now Croatia), and Sophie (Fintz) Herz, of Strasbourg, Germany (now France). She attended Lakewood Elementary School and graduated in 1943 from Arlington High School.
In addition to being a housewife, Goldie worked in a variety of occupations, ranging from being a homemaker to working in the advertising department of the Everett Herald, sales positions with Rumbaugh's in Everett, and J.C. Penney's in Arlington. She worked several years as a professional cook at Cascade Valley Hospital, Cedarcrest Golf Course Restaurant, Arlington Retirement Center, and Marysville Care Center. She spent her last eight working years as a cashier at the Shell Station at I-5's Exit 206.
She was a member of the Congregational Church in Arlington until 1969, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over twenty years, and very involved with the Rainbow Girls. She was an avid league bowler until 2005, and played on women's softball teams locally when she was younger. Her favorite activities over the past few years were doing word search puzzles, and watching or listening to all of the Mariner's games.
Goldie was married to Burke Heaton, of Arlington, from 1944 to 1972, and to Homer Wassam from 1973 to 1995, both of whom preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Frank Gordon Herz; uncles, Ivan Brose and Louis Hercigonia; and aunt, Helen Staringer; in addition to her paternal grandparents, George and Frances Angela Hercigonia, who lived adjacent to the family farm.
Goldie is survived by her sons, Dennis Heaton (Jennifer Way), of Arlington, and Dale (Geri) Heaton, of Tulalip, WA; three grandchildren, Leena (Douglas) Prindle, of Bothell, WA, Jennifer Park, of Camano Island, WA, and David (Ashley Austin) Heaton, of Stanwood, WA; with a total of six great-grandchildren. Stepchildren are Ted (Jane) Wassam, of Palo Alto, CA, David Wassam, of Whitehall, MT, Dan Wassam, of CA, and Enid Charbonneau, of Chewelah, WA; and numerous step-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Elsie Noack, of Bellingham, WA; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and by two older aunts, Angie Sedy and Goldie Brose, both of Arlington.
A memorial service is planned for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January, 29, 2011, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 615 E Highland Drive, Arlington, WA.
Memorial Donations may be made to Children's Hospital in Seattle.
A private interment of her ashes will be at a later date, beside the remains of her late husband, Homer, at Willamette Military Cemetery, Portland, OR.

Mom, Thanks will never be enough for all the time you dedicated with all of the doctor visits, numerous surgeries, therapy, and all that takes in. You were truly one -of-a-kind as far as a Mother and definitely will never be forgotten. We know you grew tired and now you no longer have to struggle. Your loving Son, Dale.
