Betty Hougen
Betty Hougen passed away peacefully on April 21, 2011. She was ready to join her Lord and Savior and was surrounded by many members of her family prior to her death. She was born January 30, 1921 in Fountain Prairie Township, Minnesota to Charles and Vera German. When she was a young girl she moved with her family to Hearne Texas. Shortly after high school graduation she married Jack Goodwin and moved to Tyler, Texas where she spent much of her adult life. Jack died at a relatively young age and Betty married Bill Rendelman and remained in Tyler until his passing. She had many friends in Tyler, but finding herself retired and alone she decided to move to Everett, Washington to be close to her brother and his wife. She embraced the Northwest and made many friends through Newcomers Club, Trinity Episcopal Church, and her many bridge groups.
She enjoyed traveling and visited many parts of Europe, Australia and New Zealand. However, it was on a short trip to the Oregon Coast where she met Richard (Dick) Hougen. When she and Dick married his daughters and their families welcomed her with open arms. She and Dick enjoyed three years together before he succumbed to cancer. However, her relationships with his family did not end as they continued to be close.
Betty's nieces and nephews hosted a 90th birthday party for her this past January. She was very touched that so many family and friends were there to celebrate this milestone in her life.
Survivors include her brother, Charles German and his wife, Jean, of Everett, Washington; nieces and nephews, Janis Harris (Ray), of Beeville, Texas, Judy Dotson ,of Lake Wylie, South Carolina, Peggy Burke (Jimmy), of Deer Park, Texas, Ronnie Rowan (Kathy), of Hearne, Texas, Bobby Rowan (Brenda), of Caldwell, Texas, Charles German III (Linda), of Dallas, Texas, Mary Lou Carlo-Thomas (Larry), of Edmonds, Washington and Jim German (Claire), of Waitsburg, Washington.
