Charles Richards Obituary

Charles W. Richards
aka "Uncle Sam"

On Monday, April 4, 2011, we lost our "Uncle Sam". Charlie was born April 16, 1946 to Stanley and Alice Richards of Thomaston, ME. He grew up in Thomaston and joined the USAF, serving in Viet Nam.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leslie of ME; and half-brothers, Stanley and Enselmo of NY.
He is survived by sister, Donna of Friendship, ME; many cousins, neices, nephews, hundreds of friends and Charlie's special angel, Angie Nicholson of Arlington, WA.
Charlie was very involved with the Sno-King Vietnam Veterans group and was "Uncle Sam" to thousands of people over the last two decades. All of those who knew Charlie also knew Uncle Sam.
Please join us at a get-together in Charlie's honor at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at the Pioneer Hall in Arlington.
Graveside services with full Military Honors will be 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 18, 2011 at the Veterans Memorial at Floral Hills, Lynnwood, WA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the local Vietnam Veterans Chapter 423.

Dear Charlie,
Such a wonderful person you are. All it took was a phone call and you were here willing to help. We have such great memories of the years we've known you--memories that will always be with us. Curt misses your phone calls and visits you two discussed about for hours.
We'll miss your voice as you're walking down the hall to leave---Bye Curt---Love You Marsh. Dear Charlie you left us way too soon. This is not Good Bye. Take care.
Love You,
Curt and Marsha

One of the last great characters of our time. His smile was unmatched. His eyes as warm as a down blanket on a winter's day. And his heart bigger than any (darn!) flag that's EVER flown.

I'm blessed to have known Charlie for 20+ years. And though our paths tended to mostly cross via the Internet we did hook up from time to time in the flesh, last of which took place last July at St. Michelle Winery listening to one of his all-time favorite musicians- Jackson Browne.

Time is the most important thing that we have to give to others. Endeavor to never find yourself regretting not spending it with those you love.

Goodbye my friend.

Charlie taught me a lot about Viet Nam and about the world of politics. He was a dear friend, and I can't tell you the number of times I did the makeup for Uncle Sam. He was a patriot, a warrior, a friend, and mostly a loving man who had a heart the size of Texas.
Happy Trails Charlie, until we meet again.

Charlie Richards/ Uncle Sam-- You have to be one of the Greatest Friends, Jokers, Storytellers; the kindest, most humble man of this earth and you were very good with a camera too ! Sharing the gallery space on lower Hewitt in the early 80's was such a good time.
I join your friends, family, service brothers & sisters in a salute in your honor. Jessica & I send our love.
The Lord knows his best friend is beside him. We Love you and your memory,

Charlie was a "true friend" of mine & I will miss his emails & the sound of his voice on the phone, which always brought a smile to my face. The world has lost a good man, but God has a brand new angel . Rest in Peace sweet Charlie
