Dorothy Oliver Obituary

Dorothy Lu Hull Oliver
June 6, 1925 - Jan. 20, 2011

Dorothy was born to Herman Chester Hull and Marie Antoinette Josephine Kersch in Julesburg, Colorado. When they divorced she was raised and adopted on her 9th birthday by her paternal aunt, Carrie Grace Hull. She graduated from Campion Academy and went on to college at Keene Texas. She later transferred to Walla Walla College. It was there she met John Paul Oliver. On June 13, 1949 they got married in Portland, Oregon and made their home in Colorado. They had two children, Mary Sue and Leonard Eugene. After their divorce Dorothy moved to California in 1960 and raised her children as a single parent.
Dorothy held many jobs during her life; teacher, bus driver, caregiver, hearing aid sales, telephone operator, chicken vaccinator, but teaching was her favorite! She especially loved teaching 7th grade children. She dreamed of traveling across the United States and visiting all the historic sites she had taught about, of sailing the seas on a tall ship, and seeing the world. She loved any color as long as it was blue. She only liked two kinds of pie - hot or cold. Life was exciting and she lived it as fully as she could. It didn't take much to get her to go along on any adventure! It was hard when her health forced her to retire and settle down, but she was loved by all the friends she made as she went along. Dorothy loved spending time with all her family and enjoyed being a "nother mother to her children's friends and a foster grandma to many boys and girls.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Marie; step mother, Sarah; adoptive mother, Carrie; husband, John; and sister, Ferne.
She is survived by her children, Mary (Jim) McGauhey, Leonard (Estrella) Oliver; grandchildren, Carrie (Rich) Barnett, Jill Oliver, Benjamin McGauhey; brothers, Herman (Carol) Hull, Thomas (Michelle) Hull; sisters, Patricia (Chuck) Carson, Sarabelle Young, Cheryl McNutt; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday afternoon February 19th. 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Marysville Seventh-day Adventist Church 12021 51st Street NE, Marysville, WA. In lieu of flowers please send a donation to Foster Parents Association of Washington State at fpaws.org in her name.
