"Duffer" Smith Obituary

"Duffer" Herman A. Smith

Duffer entered into rest on May 14, 2011. He was born in Coleharbor, North Dakota to Herman and Bernice Smith on August 25, 1932. The family moved to the Darrington, WA area and Duffer was raised in the Whitehorse area.
Duffer served his country in the 412th Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After mustering out of the military, he went to work in the logging industry, working for 40-years doing various jobs. Duffer also worked during these years packing in and building trails in Glacier Peak Wilderness.
Duffer and Wanda raised their four children in the Whitehorse area. Duffer loved children, any kid would do, the outdoors and any type of animal. He burnt up most of his daylight hours coaching little league, enjoying family camping trips, fishing and picnicking.
Duffer leaves behind his loving wife of 54 years, Wanda; children, Doug (Valerie) Smith, Ray Smith, Terry Smith and Tammy Smith; grandchildren, Adrienne (Paul) Meyers, Evan, Dana, and Elizabeth Smith; great-grandchildren, Dorien, Allia, and Rowan; many nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his brothers, Neil (Shirley) Smith, of Bellingham, WA and Paul (Loretta) Smith, of Marysville, WA; and sister-in-law, (Virginia) Smith, of Darrington.
Preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Bernice Smith; sisters, Lyle Louella, Frances (Ted) Jensen, of Graham, WA and Margie (Wally) Triplett, of Frenchtown, MT; and brother, Wayne Smith, of Darrington.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Marysville YMCA or Darrington Junior Athletic Association.
Duffer was much loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Following Duffer's request, no services will be held.

Wanda & family,
Although, I hadn't seen Uncle Duffer for a while, I remember him vividly. Always, teasing me when I was a kid, seems like yesterday. His passing was very tough on my mom (Virginia), she said he was like her little brother. He touched many lives and will live on in our memories. Candy (Smith) Ottum.
( I also lived in Ellensburg, Wa. Now live in Dallas, OR. )

My Uncle Duffer was the one of the sweetest and kindest men I knew as a child. He was patient and understanding. The world would be improved if it contained more men like Duffer Smith. In my family, Duffer is greatly missed.

Wanda and Family, We had a toast to Duffer Friday during Happy Hour at The Red Top. Everyone enjoyed his visits and his stories. Tolly said "Duffer never would of wanted a bunch of people standing around crying over him" as in a funeral. We will truly miss him. Tolly and Mildred Sue

Wanda recently told us that someone said to her "I loved that cranky old man". That was perfect. Duffer was one of a kind, and everyone who knew him had to feel the same way. Whether it was hours spent in the crummy, the brush or the blind, that time with him will never be forgotten. Although, some may consider this a dubious honor, he's the only guy whose name was bestowed on our favorite retriever. And, the kids -- you have to love a guy that makes your children feel special. Duffer really had a gift for being sure the kids were having fun! And, the adults who were hanging around had some fun, too! We were lucky to know him.
