Garfield Robert Crawford
Garfield Robert Crawford, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather went to be with the Lord on January 24, 2011.
Gar started life June 13, 1922 in Edgar, Wisconsin and left the Midwest to fly for the Air Force during WWII. He served as a captain with the 307th bomb group and flew the B24. Captain Crawford, upon returning to civilian life, earned a BS from USC and taught grade school. His teaching career was interrupted when the Air Force recalled him to active duty during the Korean War. He served his country faithfully and left the military a highly decorated veteran, his many medals to include the distinguished Flying Cross. His friends remember him as a courageous, humble, man who was always a gentleman. He kept a lifelong membership in the American Legion.
Later, he earned a BS degree from USC and taught grade school. Garfield completed his working years as a self-employed forging, casting, and metal stamping salesman for the military and aerospace industries.
Garfield's professional life allowed much travel and adventure but eventually he settled, with his family, in Lynnwood, WA where he stayed for the last 40 years. He viewed family life as a blessing and involved himself with Scouting programs, Awana, and many activities with his children.
He served faithfully at the Berean Bible Church for 40 years, 35 of them as an usher. Many people were touched by his humble, calm, reassuring nature and wonderful sense of humor. His big smile could lift up a room; his words were always kind and filled with wisdom. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Garfield is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Jane; son, William (Glenda Smith); daughter, Katherine; grandchildren, Sarah and Willie; and great-grandchildren, Haley, Amanda, and Carlos.
A heartfelt thanks to Julie Crawford, Jo Engle, Cassie Bjorn, and the Hospice program for your support and kindness.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Berean Bible Church, 2345 N. 185th Street, Shoreline, WA.
