Ralph Sweet Obituary

Ralph was born on November 25, 1953 in Seattle, and was enjoying his final scuba dive when he passed away on May 24, 2014. He was a 1973 graduate of Roosevelt High School where he was a member of the football team. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1974 and was honorably discharged in 1980. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Ralph and Mrs. Margaret Sweet; and his in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. John and June Brown. Ralph met his wife, Linda in 1977, and they were married on March 31, 1979. They became an instant family with daughter Christie, son Michael, and Ralph Jr soon following. The family moved to Edmonds in 1981 and resided there for the next 23 years, until they relocated to Marysville in 2004. Ralph became a proud member of the Teamsters Union in 1977 and was was affiliated with Locals 174, 741, and most recently 38. He began his truck driving career at Best Way Motor Freight, spent 26 years at YRC where he was a shop steward for may years, and was most recently driving for Hogland Transfer in Everett. He enjoyed hiking, camping, swimming, but most of all scuba diving. He was an integral part of the group of volunteers who created and maintained the underwater park in Edmonds. Ralph is survived by his wife, Linda; his three children; his daughters-in-laws, Bree Sweet and Barbara Accetturo; and his eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Ilisko (Harry) of San Jose, Calif., Penny Sweet (Larry Springer) of Kirkland, Terry Strausser (George) of Lynnwood, and Cathy Sweet of Marysville; two nieces, four nephews, their families, and his closest friends, Dan and Collen, Mike, Bruce, Kirby; and all the members of the diving community. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Plaza Room of the Edmonds Library at 650 Main St., with a reception to follow. The family will then be walking down to Brackett's Landing where military honors will take place. All who wish to join them are most welcome. At this time members of the dive community will escort Ralph into the underwater park. Our thanks to all of the people who put forth valiant effort in rescuing and reviving Ralph. We will be eternally grateful. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Ralph's name to the Edmonds Parks Dept. or your favorite charity. I was sorry to hear the sad news of Ralph's passing. Knew Ralph from elementary on through to high school. Had not seen him since graduation. Lots of fun playing football with Ralph whether organized Pee-Wee or Gil Dobie or a pick-up game in the park. Or just hang'in out. He was a good guy then, and it sounds as though he continued to be that way into adulthood. A sad loss. My condolences to his family and close friends.

Ralph, you were always great to work with at the park. I hope you have found a new dive site where you are now to enhance with not only you your work but more importantly, yourself.

I knew Ralph in highschool and he was always the sweetest guy, no pun intended! But that's how I remember him, always so kind and sweet to everyone. Though I've not seen him in years I've often wondered how he was doing. I didn't know he was in the military or a member of my old union Local 174. RIP Ralph. He will be sorely missed. All my best and deepest condolences to his whole family.

OK, OK, Ralph, I went and bought my Seahawks t-shirt. I will forever think of you when wearing it. Since you were married to Linda I have known and loved you for quite some time and I must say you were that bright star that always shinned no matter what the occasion or circumstance. We were all blessed the day you became a member of our family. To my family, I hope you find comfort in knowing you all had the best of the best in a husband, father and grandfather, that you were deeply loved. RIP Ralph <3 John and Robin Watts

I first met Ralph (Ralphy) as a young boy, living in Laurelhurst with his parents and four devoted sisters. he always held a high position in the hearts of all who knew him. I will cherish my memories of that impish little guy who grew into a special man much admired for his good heart.

I first met Ralph when he would make deliveries to Central Welding in Everett. He always had a smile and something nice to say. I will miss running into him and his wife at Safeway in Marysville getting their Sunday morning coffee. mine and my families prayers will be with his family.

I am saddened by this loss. I reflect back on a laughter filled fun time in Vegas with both Ralph's. I think of fun stories told by "little" Ralph of his dad...my favorite is his weed removal system that ended in the fire department showing up. My thoughts are with the Sweet Family right now. Know that if you need anything at all we will be there for all of you.

I opened up the paper on Sunday to read this and my heart sank. Ralph has been making deliveries to my work at least once a week as far back as I can remember. We hit it off right away when he learned I was a Seahawk fan. We talked every visit about the bad years and most recently the great year. I am truly going to miss him. I always knew when his truck pulled up to the dock that I was going to see a smiling face and have the latest Seahawk update. My heart hurts for his family. He was one of a kind. RIP Ralph!

It was a blast playing football with Ralph, so tough and so funny. No matter how long life is, it never seems to be enough. I think though, he did go out doing something he loved. He has a loving family and I feel he had a blessed life. For his part in my own life I am grateful. He even made it into the lyrics of a song I wrote at RHS. Rest in peace buddy. May your family find consolation and love. Joy is much more when shared, grief is much less when shared.

Ralph will be missed working with us in the Underwater Park. Many of the features were made from materials collected and brought to the park by Ralph. The names of some of the features bear the names of his grandchildren. He was a personal inspiration to me when I was recovering after being run over by a drunk driver. His help and support got me back into diving. I will always keep him my thoughts.
