Richard Gumbel Obituary

Richard A. Gumbel

Richard A. Gumbel, 55, of Arlington, WA passed away March 19, 2011 from a brain tumor that was diagnosed seven months ago.
He was born in Portland, OR July 1, 1955.
He leaves behind his wife of 34 years, Liz (Smoot); daughter, Jessica (fiance Derek); and son, Trevor, all of Arlington. Rick grew up in Shoreline and leaves behind his mother, Mrs. Billie Gumbel. He is survived by seven brothers and sisters, two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, and their spouses and children. He also leaves behind many other family members and lifelong friends who will miss him.
Preceding him in death was his father, Paul A. and nephew, Matthew.
Rick spent 21 years in the Navy retiring as a Yeoman Chief Petty officer. He then became a paralegal and spent over 14 years working for attorney Jim Doros until shortly before his death.
Rick loved his watches, golf, fishing and most of all, camping with his wife Liz.
Services will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 3 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1200 East 5th St. Arlington, WA.
Liz believes her mother Betsy came to take him home as she passed away one year ago on the same day.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the church or The American Cancer Society.

Oh my Goodness. As we get older, the world seems to get smaller. I did not realize he spent time working with Jim Doros. Jim and I were friends and I spent more than a few days at their home in Port Townsend. I wish I would have known he worked with Richard. I know he is really missed.
