Robert DeWitt Obituary

Robert Stanley DeWitt

Robert Stanley DeWitt, age 59, passed away peacefully in his sleep April 25, 2011 at his home in Burlington, Washington.
An avid hiker working on a book about his hikes with his wife, Rosemary, and hiking buddy, Don, Robert hiked all over Washington State for many years and was a gifted outdoor photographer. Mount Baker and the surrounding mountains were his favorites. Robert was born in Everett, Washington and moved to Skagit County in 1984 to be closer to the mountains.
Robert was very outgoing and liked by everyone he met. Bob's house, which was surrounded by flat farmer's fields, mountains and open skies enjoyed perfect kite weather. Bob often set dozens of colorful kites into the air tethered to wooden blocks on cement pedestals at points around his yard that could be seen from as far away as the I-5 freeway and long local crossroads. People would drive over to admire the kites in the air and stop to talk to Bob about them. Bob was comfortable talking to anybody. Bob carried a small back packing kite in the form of a bird and sent it up into the skies for those, not yet up the trail as far as he was, to wonder about. Is that a tropical bird up there? He would just smile when they reached him and realized it was one of his kites.
Services were private, at his request, in Clear Lake, WA.
His wife and hiking partner, Rosemary; his son, Jason, of Bellingham, WA; his brother, David, of Snohomish, WA; and his niece, Erin, of Seattle, WA survive him. He enjoyed many friends who will miss his sense of humor and the ready smile that warmed the hearts of all of us left behind to miss him, until we are together again.

Bob was my favorite actor in high school. I remember seeing every performance of "Flowers for Algernon" and wishing I had his talent. Several members of the EHS class of 70 have been trying to locate him recently, especially for the 40th anniversary reunion. I know he will be missed and is hiking in heaven.
